I want to turkey hunt this year in ringwood around the shepard lake area, I went last year for fall turkey but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions or anyone hunt that area. I am looking to get wife into hunting and I want to make a good impression this year. Please help!

There are a lot of birds in that area but there are too many guys that practice their calling on them before the season comes around. This forces you to work much harder to score on a bird. Most of the birds will be call shy and will try and sneak in on you.

Several years ago you could go to the Monksville reservoir boat launch just before sunrise, blow a crow call and get 3 or 4 gobblers to respond. The first year I turkey hunted I shot a 19.5 lb. bird on my 2nd day out and there was another bird with him. Since then either I forgot how to turkey hunt or the numbers have gone down. There are birds there but some of the locals feed them and don't seem to spread out as much.

P.S. Don't forget the pepper spray.

The gate to the lake doesn't open until 7am or 8am. I believe it's the same for the trap range. I have been parking down below on Morris and I walk up in the dark. No birds at Ringwood but I did shot a bird by Monksville. Stop in the office on Sloatsburg and get some maps, Certain areas are restrcited etc, That is where you can apply for a brushwood permit ofr your truck too. There is a ton of property.
