and another bang and a decent buck running across a field and out of my life. [cry]

I shot a little past my personal buckshot range, but it was a clear shot, I fired another as he was running across the field.

I looked for any sign of a hit, but found no sign other than his tracks.

Oh well, I'll get him next year.

I've been telling you all along that you should've been hunting with your muzzleloader. It wouldn't have been too far a shot :D

Don't worry about it bud. You've had a great season without that buck. Probably better than the past few years. [up]

I have to wonder in your experiance if he were gut shot with 1 or 2 pellets what kind of sign would you have found?

there is no personal buckshot range there is an ethical shotgun range.... i shoot 60 yrds with 3and half inch double 00 cause im confortable.... proper choke and load they say 70 but im not confortable with that

Very good question. And that is why I followed the tracks over 200 yards. I tracked across the field and into the woods where he ran back into. I was on my hands and knees looking for any sign of a hit.
Jakesbeard - what more would you have done?

Good try chuck7413. As long as you feel that you gave it your best effort in trying to ascertsin if the deer was hit, then you can be nothing but satisfied with your efforts. I hunted primarily 12 guage shotgun this deason, but really do prefer my muzzle loader. Have never hunted with buckshot.

To next season for all of us [drinking]

I firmly believe that I missed this deer clean.
Believe what you want but the odds are he got a couple and if one hit an organ he's toast.
I can't get over how many guys will openly acuse bowhunters in general and traditional guys in particular of wounding lots of deer that later die unrecoverd after a long ugly death but than talk about "Throwing buck shot" at deer as if it were rice at a wedding. A load of crap that deal is buckshot wounds more deer IMO than all archers combined.
There is no such thing a a responcable "HailMarry shot" with any weapon but buckshot is the WORST!

see jake we agree on something... Buckshot wounds way more deer than archery.
..Driving deer with buckshot should not be legal..
.sorry drive hunters.. i just think alot of deer get wounded that way... yes bow hunters wound alot of deer but imagine how many more deer would get wounded if we were shooting at running deer...i know its alittle different but when you think about it, its really not....
..basically a bow and buckshot have the same killing range...40 yards max...

see jake we agree on something...
Have I disagreed with you on something? I know you think I should not shoot 100" bucks but thats your opinion and your intitled to it since it is primarily based on where YOU hunt not on where I hunt, so be it.
..Driving deer with buckshot should not be legal..
Ahh but most CLUBS in the Federation are all about that and WILL be about driving them with crossbows too so since might makes right there is nothing YOU or I can do about it but step around rotting bucks.
Buckshot wounds way more deer than archery.
I am willing to bet we agree on more than this one observation.

Oh by the way not with my bow. 25 max and that is if I'm feeling good conditions are perfect and I have the time to shoot regular sometimes I have to drop thngs down to 10 yards to be a responcable hunter.
