just curious to see how many guys keep a hunting journal and if its useful

I keep a fishing and hunting log. I say the date, time, what im hunting, where I am hunting it, male or female and how many. pheasants, quail, deer anything I shoot goes into it. I do the same with fishing..lures and all that stuff. I use it to find patterns, especially with fishing.

I used to when I was younger all the way up until a couple years ago.

Come to think of it...ever since baiting started, I stopped...never really gave it much thought, but I'd imagine because it had less and less to do with patterning deer around their natural environment and movement as opposed to understanding where people were and where they baited...dynamics that logging movements doesn't really help IMO.

I keep one but the way I do it is alot of work and I got busy with life and let the journal lapse half way through the season..It is hard to catch up..But I do like keeping the journal and revisiting it..I have some fishing journals from 15 yrs ago and read them every once in awhile and it brings me back..

trad guy i was thinking the same thing about passing them on man has my view changed since i had my daughter i like the calender idea

I keep journals, they come in handy especially if you hunt multiple places. You can always go back and see what and when, and where you were seeing deer, or catching fish. I also keep them for interesting reading in my later years. Or my kids, and grandkids can read them.
My grandmother kept a journal of her life and it was interesting to read.

Regarding the passing down part, that is why I started taking lots of pictures and writing my reports for fishing and hunting. Those are what I plan on handing down...I wish I had some stories and pictures from when my grandfather was alive or when my dad was younger...I'm sure those reads would have been very, very interesting! I keep a log for fishing. Keep track of the numbers of fish caught, conditions, water temp, etc etc. I'm also a captain of a small group that hunts the late season doe days. I keep track of the drives we do, number of deer we start, shots, and of course kills. Makes it easier to set up drives. The captains in my club also keep logs during deer week containing the same info. They go back to the 1950's.

my uncle in vermont has journals from the first days out in his youth, not one trip out in his life has not been put down on paper. he keeps them in a book shelf in the living room. when I visit I some times read them, I can sit there for hours and just read, brings back a lot of good memories. worth putting in print. I have tried but it never lasts.

I started keeping a journal in 1985. Missed a few years here and there but have them pretty consistent from 1992 till this year. I started one this year, but have not kept up with it. I will probably do a summary of the season from memory with some pictures in the next week or so. That is not as good as keeping it every day, but it's better than trying to remember what happened 10 years from now. The sad thing is, when I look back, I know how good hunting used to be in the areas I hunt, and can see just how bad it's become.

The good ole days are certainly gone from the typical farm or woodland setting hunting landscape Now, unless you are hunting in someones backyard or some other off limits, protected area, big deer are about as hard to find as an albino rattlesnake at the North Pole.

I started keeping one last year. When I get home from a hunt, I'll jot down where I was, what I saw and how many, weather conditions and odd or different things that happened while I was out there.

i did one a couple years back. its neat to look back on things .its amazing how foggy things get a couple years later. i will do one this year. i always kept it on the dash of my truck. i would enter into it after each hunt and if i forgot i would add things when i could. it wasnt that much to keep up at all.the only thing required is to just go to the dollar store and get a notebook with a cool outdoor scene on it.just make sure its not hello kitty[lol]
