I hunted zone 2 a few days last week and today and saw very few deer and heard very few shots.
But as jcchatboy said they go nocturnal.
I put my trail cam out Sunday AM and got 5 Bucks and 9 Doe pics in one night in an area that we saw 2 Deer all week.
The Deer are just way to smart for us!
Last year in the same area I wasn't seeing many deer. Than one afternoon in January I saw 40 deer walking thru the pines on the Neighbors property within 150 yards of where I hunt.Oh ya, She doesn't allow hunters on her property.

Any good public land around zone 10

About all there is for gun hunting is Musconetcong and Pohatcong WMAs. They are busy Saturdays, but not too bad during the week, especially in the morning. There is one piece, if you look at the maps, that is basically the side of a steep hill, never seen another hunter there.

Another thing about gun season pressure is that lots of guys are in the woods that Saturday and Sunday before the opener. Hanging stands, scouting for sign, etc. This freaks the deer out too.

I will add another thing, the late leaf fall this year. Leaf fall opens up the woods and makes the deer feel exposed in areas they used to feel safe in. This changes patterns and usually occurs in late October. However, this year it was about the time we are talking about.

These NJ deer are very educated and there are many places for them to hide. Unlike the deer in books, they like to hug roads.
One of my best stands on a management hunt is 50 yards off a major road. Not the most scenic stand, but I've killed 2 big 8's and a truckload of does...and the drag is real easy!
