I went to buy my ML permits today and got to talking to the owners of the shops,I couldn't believe what they told me. They had to pay $400 for the machine that prints out the licenses, I figured that the state issued them, and if they stop selling licenses then they have to give the machine back,FREE.They have to pay $300 a yr for some kind of insurance in case THEY steal the money, plus they have to pay a book keeper $16.50 an hr just for state funds.Unbelievable.

I think most shops use the sale of Licenses to bring customers to the store so customers can spend money on other items.
Same goes for check stations. They don't make any $ checking deer but have a potential customer.
Still sucks that they have to pay so much for the machine.

Who do you think the shop, passes that fee onto?
It's a catch 22, you go get your license, and then spend money in the shop.
I'm not saying I'm in favor of the "system", but it's up to the shop to figure out, if it's cost effective for them.

it sucks but that's how it is. I know personally when i go to buy stuff i go to the shop that sells me my licenses first, even though its further than a couple other places. The way i figure it, if they're selling me my license and i know its at a loss for them, i can put the extra effort into buying from them.

So they make it harder to sell a license...somebody stops selling them, a couple of guys stop buying them...but we just don't know why the hunters numbers are shrinking.

Price out the little guy first. He makes up the largest hunting contingent. Once he's out you can do away with it. They can live with a few richer guys hunting in some far off western state. Just not around here.

It's not just the fees that are deterring some. The amount of red tape to acquire a gun and a license plus the dwindling open land isn't helping.

My young neighbor has taken an interest in my hunting and approached me the other day to inquire what all is involved. The look of amazement from a current non-hunter when I explained the process. I'm going to encourage him and help him any way I can. (Brought his Brittney pup some pheasant wings last night.)

First the state does not own the machine the people in TENN own it second if the guy has such a peoblem why does he not dump it and go without

Well Mr Positive because they've been in business for 35 years and they're loyal to their customers.I'm sure that they make their money back but I just think it's BS that the shops have to pay for the machines.

I agree, it is BS that they must pay for the machines, and if I'm correct they only make $1 per license sold, but also by selling the licenses they also draw in more business......Catch22 I guess

That is why some shops don't sell them anymore. Got ridiculous for 50 cents on a license that takes alot of time out from providing customer service to other customers waiting while you are messing around with licenses and permits. I agree it brings people into the store but the store owner should not have to pay to do the states handy work. The insurance policy, well that is probably a good idea either way. The old days when the state would deliver the paper licenses and stamps to sell, you could have 25000 dollars worth of licenses behind the counter.
