Already lunch time and no check in from TJC yet? [confused] I'm guessing he ran out of shells and is trying to find a sporting goods store that has 16ga Fiocchi Golden Pheasant loads in stock [hihi]
Well... went to our traditional hunting grounds this morning and hunted the fields that are normally very productive. Didn't see anything [cry]. I was just about late for work, so I decided that I would head to my car and make a dash for the office. My pops was gonna keep hunting and take the dogs home with him, but he was willing to hunt back to the parking lot with me. On the way back to the parking lot one of the dogs started getting birdy and began to run a bird up the hedgerow. I whoa'd her and we started to work the bird real easy. All of a sudden... the bell stops ringing. Point! We start to walk in on the point and the other dog goes on point 10 yards behind the 1st point. WTF? [confused] So I'm thinking that the 2nd dog is pointing old scent and the 1st dog is pointing the bird (always remember... trust your Bird Dog). As we walk in on the 1st point a rooster gets up and my pops wings it. We released the dog and she was on the chase. Bird ran here, bird ran there, bird ran everywhere [hihi]. Fortunately the dog was able to run it down and bring it back. With all the excitement of a running bird I forgot all about the other dog pointing "old scent". As my attention turned back to the 2nd dog I decided to release him and he didn't budge... still on a rock solid point. WTF? [confused] So I'm thinking the rooster must have been sitting there all night and left a heavy scent cone that the dog is mistaking for a bird. (just remember... always trust your Bird Dog). Another release command and the dog still doesn't want to budge. I decide to walk in on the point and to my surprise a hen gets up. Not surprisingly though, the hen fell to a double belch of my Ruger.
At this point I'm thinking, "F work... I'm gonna continue hunting until my bag limit is full." So we make a sweep through the woods around the parking lot and long story short my pops and I kicked up 3 more birds. We missed a rooster and each bagged a hen. All-in-all it was a cold, wet, crummy day. But on the bright side we each bagged 2 pheasant and will be feasting on Pheasant Chili this evening.
