There are turkeys in Wharton, but I think they have a very large range. They don't roost in the same spot every night like turkeys on better quality habitat. During the Spring, they move to open spaces which tend to be the few places you can't hunt in Wharton or private property just off the SF. The population is probably growing and the hunting should be good in a few years.
 
I used to hunt in Wharton before I moved up to Mercer County. Wharton is great for turkeys and there is plenty of land to hunt. There are many hidden grass fields that you can and some that you can't access by car. The turkeys are established and there are some serious long beards in there. Some good areas are not far off Washington within a few miles of the Ranger station.
