Ok so we went offshore midday yesterday. Beautiful weather and a wonderful shake down cruise (we had a tough time with engines this season, finally we got everything dialed in) So we found what we wanted to see and set up. We slowly started picking at tuna on bait and jigs. Then we caught a swordie about 100 lbs. Then a rod goes off and keeps going off....big swordfish!! We were taking the owner's clients out so there were only 3 of them. One was beaten up by tuna. One was beaten up by the first sword and after 30 minutes the 3rd can't taken anymore punishment. So i get on the rod. About 2 hours later here she comes and she's a beauty. We estimated her weight around 350 lbs. That's the biggest sword i've ever seen and i got to play her. High fives and cold beers all around. After we deal with this fish (she was around 13 feet long) we get inundated with dolphin fish between 6 and 10 lbs. We catch a couple and they keep coming. They're SO thick we can't get tuna baits past them and we're reading and seeing tuna swirling through the slick. Only one way to get to the tuna......slaughter the mahi and hopefully we can deplete their numbers enough so we can baits through. After a while we can get tuna baits down and we're catching tuna mixed in with the dolphin fish massacre. They were so thick the owner and myself free gaffed at least a dozen just swimming around the boat. This continued until daybreak. We really wanted to go tile fishing so we saved room for them despite the tons of mahi swimming all over the place. So we headed over to the tile grounds and started wailing on the BIG tile fish. The biggest weighed 49.8 lbs. (don't wanna brag but i caught that fish too) After we filled every nook and cranny with fish and ice, we headed for the barn. Our totals for the trip were 34 dolphin fish, 3 longfin tuna, 6 yellowfin tuna, 13 tile fish and 2 swords. Excellent trip great crew and great times. Here's some pictures.
