In case there is anyone here on this forum that, like me, had some minor scruffs with the law when they were younger, etc ...... and are thinking about getting an expungement, so they may get a NJ Firearms ID card.... do it!

I did it, without a lawyer, and it was easy. As long as you meet the simple qualifications for expungement, the state does NOT bust your chops.

In this morning's mail, is my Expungement Order, signed by the judge in Union County Superior Court.

Today is exactly 9 weeks since I started it ... it took about 9 days to get my official Criminal Record from the NJ State Police, and the rest of the time, the Superiour Court had it.

I did everything through the mail. I did not have to attend any hearing, etc.

$30 (state police criminal record) + $52 (petition the court) + $39 (postage - certified/return receipt letters) = $121

Now I have that monkey off my back.

Funny thing is .... I have a safe full of guns I acquired without a FID. Now that I have a FID, the family budget is so tight, I can't really buy any guns. lol

Brianb,
Where can I get information on this?
New Jersey Legal Services ....
http://www.lsnj.org/

Look for ... "Clearing Your Record 2007 .." ....
http://www.lsnj.org/selfhelp.htm#clearing

All the info you need, minus the forms, is right there .... written in plain, simple English. You can view all the info right online there.
http://www.lsnjlaw.org/english/courts/statecourts/municipal/cyr/index.cfm

When I did mine, you could download the neccessary forms from their website, and fill them out. Now, I see, they want you to buy their $15 book to get all the forms. But, considering, its $15 well spent, and LSNJ has really performed a important service to the citizens.

Any other questions, ask away.

Good luck.

Thanx I am going to check that out....I have no more trouble than anyone else with the FID...I have one. My problem comes with the NICS. When I buy a gun it takes several hours to come back if I go on a week day during business hours. On a weekend it doesn't come back until Monday. That really screws me for making a purchase at a gun show. Not to mention it is embarrasing

I ran a backround check on myself and found nothing although there were a few minor incidents back in the '70's I recall, but they don't show on the check I ran. With one exception the charges were dropped. The exception was a misdeamenor resulting from a scuffle.

The problem is either that or this guy down South. He has an identical first, middle, and last name and a somewhat similar SSN. He is a rash on the police blotters of FL;La and TX. The last I checked he was in jail in TX.

Nothing like telling the whole world that you broke the law buy acquiring firearms illegally.

Ever think of what the Statute of limitations on that might be ?

I'm not trying to break em for ya, but think before you type. You never know who's reading these posts.

Did I miss something? I didn't read anything about a firearms offense...

I'm pretty sure any "violent" offense will cause a delay... Ever have someone pick a fight with you at a bar or otherwise and you decide to oblige...? If the cops show up and make a stink and everyone winds up arrested...

two consenting adults should have the right to kick each others teeth in if they choose to... Oh well. :)

He never said anything about buying the guns illegally. They could have been aquired when he lived out of state, from an inheritance or other legal means.

NJ does not require registration. It is voluntary. NEVER, EVER register a gun. Ever.

so what happens when you get pulled over and the gun is in someone else's name are you in trouble

Explain this "gun in someone elses's name? How does a gun get in "someone's name"?
if someone else bought the gun and he is in posession of it

unless the gun was reported stolen, its no big deal,,,,no need to register long guns in nj,,,,
so then why do I need a fid ,just to purchase guns
