I'm gonna be pissed if Jon's first deer is bigger than any of my bucks![rofl]

Jon, after 17 hunts, its tradition to allow the cameraman 17 hunts in your newly moved stand. [hihi]

You can have any of the bucks but number 2, after too many years of passing lots of bucks, I'd be more than happy to take him home for fall bow. Besides, you dont want a buck like that. The meat is all tough and hes heavy and hard to drag, plus you have to pay to get it mounted. Who needs all those hassles?

Just pass him if he comes by Friday and take one of those younger, more tender deer that dont require taxidermy bills and rearranging duck mounts.;):D

Definitely a fun night, all together I think we saw 6 different bucks. Didnt get film of all of them, but got some good footage.

You guys are seeing lots of bucks at least. Great spot! Good luck there[up]

Is the buck on the video missing brow tines and is that common?

I think it is missing brow tines... it is the first thing Matty noticed. I have no idea if that is common.

Yes the buck in the first video is missing brow tines.

Not all that common, but not something to write home to Mom about either. Its just an antler trait that you'll find with some deer. More often young deer growing their first racks will have very small or no browtines.

If I had to give an estimate on how many bucks I've seen with brow tines and how many without, Id have to say about 70% of the deer I've seen in my life have had browtines and the other 30% did not.

What I'm not sure about is, if he would have brow tines next year. My guess is he will, but I could be wrong.

Antler growth is based upon a few factors, genetics, nutrition, and age. Genetics plays a part in the shape and amount of tines, abnormalities, (of course injuries to the antlers, genitals or body can cause abnormal antler growth as well). Nutrition plays a huge role in size and mass, and age plays a part in all of that as well. Once a deer reaches his full skeletal size (around the age of 4 or 5), all the excess nutrition he takes in will go to the rack.

Antlers are very interesting, and there is a wealth of literature about them, if you're interested in learning more. Leonard Lee Rue III has written a few books about the whitetail deer that will definitely expand your whitetail knowledge!;):)

Geezus...are there any does there or just bucks?
Believe it or not, there are!:D They are just hanging out in a seperate part of the property.

I cant take credit for the properties that Ryan and Jon hunt on. Sure I take them to my spots, but Ryan found the land where he killed his first deer and Jon found the land where he will most likely kill his first.

Its all part of the learning process. Give a man a shot opportunity and feed him for a few months, teach a man to find his own hunting spots and you'll have access to great properties via friends![rofl]

Then I scout the properties with them, showing them where I would hunt and why, explaining what I think the deer will do, what wind directions will work and then we pick trees and I hang stands for us. Last night Jon learned about hanging stands as he hung the two we'll be filming out of Friday.

These guys are already on the road to great bowhunting careers. They are willing to work hard and listen. They are learning the nuts and bolts of bowhunting. Find good land, scout, scout, scout, and put in the time on stand.

You put the work in and eventually success will follow. Of course luck never hurts.[rofl][up]
