Deer Are Dieing Off

Someone that I know said the he heard on the radio this morning that the Center for disease control is saying that you shouldn't eat any deer from NJ.

Well those morons better learn what they're talkin about before opening there mouth. Wildlife biologst have already stated that the virus cannot harm humans.
On a side note..a deer with EHD is one either already dead(which you would wanna eat any how) And two if you see one your gonna know something wrong just buy the way the deer will be acting.

If the herd is getting hit hard, like it did in 1999 (and I've heard it looks like it could be at least that bad, likely worse this year), I would be in favor of them shutting down the permit seasons in the zones hardest hit. Right now that seems like 27, 28 and 29 down here. That probably will not happen though because in NJ, it's not about what is best for the resource...it's about what's best for the revenue.

Just looked a little further. EHD is blue tongue. You can eat blue tongue meat with nothing to worry about. I ate some in NC about 8 years ago not knowing what it was. We just thought we'd shot a skinny deer, later we found out it had blue tongue. I'm fit as a fiddle and never got sick from them.

Just talking to a few people from the areas who have been finding dead deer, and from F&W. The numbers of dead deer showing up this early are a little higher, or at least very similar to 1999. They also consider weather patterns when trying to determine how bad the outbreak will be and it's still early in the fall with no foreseable frost in the future. The hot and dry weather pattern, combined with dead deer showing up this early on several creek/river drainages, from the Salem River and Salem Canal all the way to the Mullica River, and the many rivers and creeks in between, including the Maurice River, Muddy Run, and Menatico Creek, indicates it may be more widespread than 1999, when it was confined to areas near the Delaware River and Bay (areas of zones 29, 63 and 35)

No one has told me they are going to close the season down, if that is what you were asking, I only stated I would support that. I have only heard they are expecting it could be very, very bad for EHD this year.

My brother found some dead deer outside of Elmer in Pittsgrove Township about 2 weeks ago, but they were too far gone, so no report was made. I've heard more than just a few cases like that.

We need a frost...badly.

just had a deer die on my property for no apparent reason, called the gam wardens to pick it up and check it out. healthy looking doe, just dead... really scaring me for this season since im only 15 min from hillsborough and they had 15 dead last i heard

EHD hit Ohio and Kentucky pretty hard this year, it is in a few areas of PA right now some of which are worse than ever recorded, it was just confirmed in 5 counties of WV, and in a few places here in NJ. The deer tested in the Hillsborough area actually had a type 2 serotype of the virus which is rare for northern states. It is quite common down south but should not be found in this area. Makes you wonder how it got here to begin with?? This is just the tip of the iceberg, if we don't get a frost early this year we could see thousands of deer die to EHD. The bright side (if there is a bright side) is that not all deer are affected by the virus. Some of them actually build an immunity to it and can survive if infected. However with this being a type 2 serotype deer in this area probably do not have much of an imunity to it since it is not a virus typically found here.
