Hi I am new to Deer Hunting and keep getting different opinions on scent control. Do I really need to buy scent control clothing? If you watch the hunting shows they act like you can't get buy without it.

you dont need all that gear to score a deer ,it helps to have it but alot of deer were killed before they came out w/ it

Charley above is a link that will clear your mind. Welcome to the site.

Here is my routine. I wash all my cloth including socks and underware, with Arm and Hammer (no dye or perfume) I first run a clean cycle of water to get all the smelly detergent out of there. When I do my cloth I give it a second cycle. I dry them in the highest heat setting, immediately place them in a seal plastic container. Rubber boots is a must for me, I also clean them with water and Arm & Hammer, and keep them in a plastic bag.

Just before I leave I hit the shower with Ivory soap do my hair with it also. I don't put on my hunting cloth till I hit the woods, I dont get dress near my vehicle and I don't allow anyone smoking or eating to get close to me while dressing, as soon as I get back to vehicle all hunting cloth come off and in the plastic container, if hot I wash them for the next hunt.

I go the extra mile and it pays off for me everyear. I hope I was of some help. Don't waste your money on Carbon suits. Jeans and dark shirts are just as ifective as long as you follow the above.

I have to wonder weather it is really worth the money and hassle. I haven't really noticed much difference. In zone 21 I have tried everything. They pick me off constantly and from incredible distances. I have only been hunting there for 4 years. After the first season I started going crazy with the scent control stuff and without much diffenence. I don't know, if the wind is wrong your nailed anyway. Last season I bought the scent blocker Underguard top and bottom. Can't say if it works or not. Didn't see a deer in zone all season. Also, try Dove unscented. I was told that it works.

you guys ever notice that stuff washed in scent free soap or baking soda or stuff sprayed with scent killer gets this wierd no smell, smell? Does that make sense. It's like this odd smell that isn't like anything I can describe. Am I the only one who notices?

BTW - I wash my clothes (not scent lok) in scent free detergent or baking soda, store it in an airtight plastic container (that has been sprayed). I try to dress in the field and spray down my gear (stand etc) and myself with scent killer. The stuff I use is from Wildlife Research. I don't think it makes a big difference but I did buy some Scent Lok gear this season - Savanna pants and crew neck shirt. I'll keep using the stuff because I don't think it can hurt. Plus I needed some lightweight camo stuff anyway and the deal at Gander Mt was very good.

CW,
Most of what you are watching on what passes for a "Hunting show" is IMO little more than an inforercial.

To kill deer wear clean rubber boots touch as little as possible with you hands while walking in and stay on the down wind side of the trail, no biggie.

You would do far better to learn how the deer trails in the area you are hunting take advantage of both prevailing winds and how the differant air currents bring scent to deer on the differant trails they will be using at differant times of the day or directions of travel and how you can use this to your advantage.
While this make take a bit of time and effort it works far better and is far cheaper than buying things that TV has made you THINK you need to kill deer.

Yea, it would be nice if the deer came from the direction you expect them to come from. Then we wouldn't need to worry about sceont control.
Most of the time they do what kind of scouting do you do?
