Anybody in Northwestern NJ thinking about or in the process of building an AR for the first time and doing research and getting parts, tools, etc.?

I would like to build my first AR and think I would like to get an Anderson Upper and Lower and go from there. I want a low-budget one that will just work. I am thinking a 16" carbine length with metal sights and a flattop and maybe with a dual red-dot sight, ability to attach a sling, and a decent trigger. I would like a milspec gas tube that would be suitable for a the barrel which I think I would want chrome-lined. Does anybody have any recommendations, thoughts, tool recommendations, or would be interested in planning and working on our builds together? Would a mid-length tube be what I am looking for?

I think an AR-9 might be cool as well.

Has anybody gotten parts from SARCO? What are some of the best sights?

Give Mastodon a call in Highland Lakes. (973) 764-9550

Haven't been there in a long time, they always had a nice supply for building AR's.

Get the lower from your local gun store. Everything else can be bought online and mailed to your door. Anderson lowers are great. I've built a few guns with them. No issues. Build the lower. But a complete upper. Primary arms usually has good deals on uppers. Usually less then $400. Once you get it have compliance work done. Then assemble your firearm. I'm a ways south of you otherwise I'd help ya.
YouTube is your friend. I've used nothing but punches and a small hammer, some electrical tape.

Thank you. I will check out Primary Arms. I like them. If I buy a fixed stock and a 16" non-threaded barrel, I am good without having to do any compliance work, right? Maybe I won't find that combo on one of the specials, though. Can I use a mid length gas tube or do i want a carbine length one for a 16" upper? I assume the gas tube is part of the lower and needs to be installed to put on the stock, right? If I buy a completed upper I would have to have it done. Can I own it with threads needing pin and stock pending getting the work done as long as the completed upper is not on the lower?

Any recommendations on sights?

For the stock get a Magpul fixed stock. No compliance work needed.
The gas tube is in the upper. Buffer tube will be behind the lower in the stock. Primary arms has uppers with comps or brakes (can't have flash hider). It'll most likely have a bayonet lug on the upper (under the barrel). That has to be removed. You can do it yourself if your good with tools. Check vids on utube.

One thing I found out over the years is a lot of places online have deals pretty regularly. I don’t think I paid full price on any of my parts and looking back, I’m sure I saved at least $500. Like stated above, build the lower and buy a complete upper. The gas block can be a PIA for a new comer. I have no experience with Primary arms but have heard good things about them. On a real cheap build I did, I went with the Aero Precision complete upper. As for sights look on Palmetto State Armory’s website. They run a lot of Magpul deals. I got the Flip Up sights for I believe $40 shipped. They’re a lot easiler than they look. Once again, YouTube is your best friend.
