Well I just recieved my lock on today and finished setting it up which was cake!

But as I finished setting it up I realized it only has one strap to secure it to the tree and its not a ratchet strap. It just a basic car seatbelt style and once tightened I figure gravity will really secure the stand to the tree.

I was curious if anyone owns one of these and if so how secure is it to the tree with just this one strap?

Or if anyone owns any other lock ons w/ a similar setup style how it is?

And does anyone add any other rathchet type style nylon/cable/chain for additional security?

This is the first lock on I've ever owned and I thought there would have been more cables or nylon or something just curious how they hold up in the tree while moving and everything.

I have three King Kong Loungers. They are awesome I'm 6'2 215lbs and I can sit in them all day long.[up]I put a extra ratchet strap on mine for piece of mind. I'm sure the supplied strap will hold but I like the extra strap for extra stability and safety.

I have one as well. I use the fast strap at the base by the foot platform, and picked up the ratchet cargo strap for the security at the top. the ratchet straps are rated to well over 3000 lbs no sense in taking risks when your 20 feet up a tree. $3.00 for security is a bargain in anyone's book

I own six gorilla stands. I have the baby gorilla in steel, three kongs (two aluminum one steel) and two aluminum king kongs. The one seatbelt strap is plenty. Be sure the tree trunk is plumb where you are going to hang the stand. The latest models have an adjustable piece to compensate for a bit of tilt. When you hang the stand strap it to the tree with the platform folded up and the seat out of the way. When you drop the platform down the cam action of the bottom contact points will lock that puppy in place. Give it a stomp when yo first climb in. Rock solid. [up]

Heya guys thanks for the quick replies!!! Mine has the strap under the seat and its steel...heavy SOB it is LOLl.

Telefante thanks for the tip bud I want to play around with it this weekend and try setting it up to a tree to see how it feels.

I think I will stop at home depot and pick up a extra ratchet strap for extra security though.

Deadbolt,
I think that everyone pretty much uses the extra stap. I use the stock strap and set the stand up. Once I've cam'd it down and got it tight, I then install the ratchet strap on lower part of the stand. I don't like the platform to wobble at all. Good luck with it.

Here are some pics of the stand...pretty much just for my bro to see...

I figured I could put the ratchet strap right at the base of the stand where it attaches to the tree so the platform stays snug...thats where everyone else puts em right?

That ratchet strap sounds like a good idea but I never had one move on me. Extra attachment can't hurt. Now, another tip, put a good bike lock on that sucker and take your lowest 5 or 6 steps out when you leave the woods. Always try to hang it in an inconspicuous place to so you don't give up your spot!

I put it on the top, just above the clip eyes. I was putting it on the bottom and I noticed that under my weight the top part of the stand that attaches to the tree, was pulling away from the tree. I guess with the strap on the bottom it messes up the cam action. I just install it properly with the ez strap and bounce on it a few times. Once it's real tignt and secure I add the exta strap for piece of mind. Also, you can buy the arm rests & foot rest now as a accessories and put them on that stand, it really makes it cozy.

Thanks everyone...

I will be attaching this thing on the same tree as my 20ft ladder stand so I dont think I will need the pulley...just climb the ladder stand and sttach it that way. But if it proves to be an issue I will do that thanks for the tips guys!

I may need to look into some arm rests though...sounds like a good idea!

Deadbolt, Do you live in North Jersey? I have been using these loc ons for thirty years and have a pretty good protocall for hanging them. I'd be glad to spend an hour with you that may save you dozens of episodes of trial and error. I am in Bergen county.

No pulleys. No hang straps. Just good, safe, technique. Let me know.

whats unsafe with using a pulley to get the stand up the tree?
Nothing at all! I said that wrong. I apologize. The whole idea of the pulley is safety. I just think that I have another way that is safe but slightly more convenient because you don't need the pulley or the pre-hanging strap that they sell with the stand. All the same, you can use a pulley and hang it just as well and it may be less physically demanding.
I've paid my dues with hang ons and, in keeping with the helping traditions of this site, I was offering to show Deadbolt one way. [up]
