Maybe a hair Matt, but you'll get liver, back of one lung center punch the other. All of them are dead deer.

Those are basically the shots I wait for...[up]

Matty/Drag, don't think your last two pics on the right are a little back?
On a quartering away shot like that you basically want the arrow to exit right behind the opposites side shoulder blade. So Matty is right on. As for me Matty's are just about right where I would try to put mine. However on his 1st "no shot" I would put my arrow right where Yoda's arrow is going. It is a picture, but it doesn't appear to me that the deer is quartering towards me too severely.

You guys had some beautifal meat hits with lots a red blood at first and no bubbles, then it started to run out and then bad news nothing.

How about making it a little more challenging what was your hair folicals like on your arrow shafts?

Maybe one or two of your shots were through the feed bag. Slim, stink and some remains. No mistake.

David...why different for gun and bow??
When I'm shooting slugs/buckshot, I aim for the shoulder. Why? Because I'm not looking for the deer to die by bleeding out. Instead, I prefer the deer to die by the massive trauma to it; by shooting at it's far shoulder. You'll always know that the deer is dead because it'll literally fall right in its tracks, instead of not being sure if you hit it correctly (using slugs). I learned this lesson on the first deer I've ever shot. It was a 70 yd slug shot which went perfectly through the heart. The problem was, the deer didn't give me any inclination that it was hit. It simply took off like a bat out of hell.

I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the results of this. It was meant to just be a comparison between us hunters and what types of shots we use.

One last comment, the deer shown were used for their positions, and the button buck info didn't need to be factored into it. But if you did, no problems here.

Oh young Yoda you have so much wisdom with the 3 years yoube been hunting dude why aim for the shoulder bone,,aim for the vital organs and the deer will die
Actually, my logic was validated by a show called The Management Advantage, hosted by the Outdoor Channel. The host used a program called the Cyber Deer and with it, he displayed the shot placement he recommends with bow shots and gun shots. He recommended shoot for the shoulder with gun shots as it provides the largest lethal area on the deer. Basically the logic was: shoot the shoulder - massive trauma and deer dies quickly, shoot low, and you get heart/lungs, shoot high - spine shot, shoot forward - neck shot, shoot back - top of lungs a little back.

I've shot 3 deer using this method, maybe not a lot, but every single deer was dead where I shot it. It works really nice. The only downside is you'll have a tendency to lose a bit of meat since it creates a ton of damage this way. I'll take that over wondering if you hit it, and needing to track it; especially when the shot is pretty far.

guess what i've shot a ton of deer and its been head, or vital shots, never had to run around tracking one
Hey, if it works for you, that's awesome. Until I see otherwise, I'll stick with shoulder shots on deer with slugs. Then again, I may start toying with neck shots on them [ko]

With a gun, try to catch an angle where you go through the vitals, then take out the off shoulder. Shortens the track.

Runnin' with Buckshot through the thick stuff - When in doubt, take out the wheels. Aim low on the chest and your pattern will also take out the front legs. They won't go far !

Dave, Don't shoot the shouler. There is a good amount of meat there that will get waisted. However, if your freezer is empy than go for it. [up]

This is the reason I aim for the head with my muzzy. One shot, one kill, freezer full :D

I didn't waste any meat with my muzy doe...double lungs and only thing I broke was one ri, Bullet went in and out both lungs and didn't damage anymeat! She was down in 50 yards!!

I'm with matty on his shot placement.
