Was shooting with my buddy last night at the Stafford forge range. had a couple people join us on the rifle range towards the end. one family siting in their shotguns for deer season and a father and daughter shooting .22s everyone was getting along fine then another two guys showed up. Pulled a lever action out of their case and I didn't think nothing off/wasn't really paying attention till the first shot which was way to loud to be a .22. Turned to him and asked what caliber it was. Turned out to be a 30-30. Told him he was legally aloud to be shooting it there, but he just kinda shrugged me off. The guy with his daughter made one or two more comments to no effect also. Guy took a couple more shots then bugged out.

Now I'm not trying to be an jerk here, but I don't want to see this range shutdown cause of this kinda stuff. I also regularly find 7.63x39 and other center fire brass on the ground.
So in this kind of Situation do I call fish and game to report people improperly using the range or do I call the local pd?

Sounds like total disreguard for the laws and safety. They would also need a valid nj hunting license.Call PD first, they would show up faster and there authority, would hold them till F&W arrive. Then there self will's will find them paying some serious consequences!!!

He was a very lucky man. If I was there the outcome would have been much different. Specifically the shrugging off part. Hard to shrug with a 30 30 stuck up your corn hole. But hey that's just me. I know it is way more safer to not approach someone like that. And I would suggest that to anyone in that particular situation. Call and get some type of law enforcement there. But at least call. Get the Tag number off his vehicle. He would have a hard time denying he did it if a couple people reported it with his Tag number.

State wide problem. Buddy just told me he was at Millville range and guy broke out several rifles and proceed to shoot up some bowling balls for shits and giggles. Buddy got tag # and called Pd don't know outcome. Not only illegal its dangerous.

Take pics of the tags and hell if bold enough video them , might be a confrontational situation but that's a personal decision. Unfortunately F&G don't have the resources to enforce the rules at every range but if we take steps to help them it can't hurt . We have to stick together or our end is eminent.

Next time I'll definitely call the local pd and maker sure to get a plate number. Stevo I would have been more aggressive about it, but with the number of kids there I didn't want to let me language get anymore colorful or have it turn into a big argument in front of them.

Call local PD as stated. I had this happen once at Flatbrook. Girl and a couple guys pull out a magnum Browning BAR. I politely said something as soon as I saw it, they played dumb and put it away before it was even loaded, then took out 22's.

Stafford Forge Range is covered by Tuckerton State Police, give them a call and let them know about the problem when it is occurring, if all else fails get a plate number and call it into the WARN DEP number.

I had the same problem at makepeace range. Everybody all nice and happy. One guy pulls a loaded silver pistol out of his sweat pants pocket. Cracks off a few rounds then puts it back. Another pulls out a 30.06 and starts blasting g away at the burn. Then a family pulls up shooting .22's and then his 16 yr old daughter asks to shoot the glock.

This is why we can't have nice things.

they were in the wrong but... if youve been to enough ranges you should know that theres a bigger picture. ive seen it all at these ranges and as long as someone is shooting safe i couldnt care less what they bring. ive had way more rapid fire 22 shootin families come to a range and shoot next to me while im taking my time sighting in guns. a 12 guage shooting slugs is going to be way louder than the sharper report of a 30-30.the common factor is that there all guns are capable of not being safe thing in the wrong hands. just cause its a 30-30 dont mean its so big and bad. every range ive been at is nothing more than a dirt backstop. whether its a rifle pistol or shotgun range.if they didnt stay long they were just checking there sights for a hunt or something. i wouldnt say anything but thats just me. living here in N.J. has everyone so uptite. that magical 30-30 as long as it was pointed in the right direction wasnt gonna damage the dirt backstop any more than the other guns. just sayin.

so when the state closes said ranges due to "violations of range guidelines " we can start a thread of whining and crying about no "free" places to shoot.......
Exactly. The rules are posted and you will walk right past them going to the lanes. Just because someone else does it or it is not policed does not make it OK to do as you like. If you are at the range and not following the rules I am going to say something to you. If you don't like being embarrassed in front of your family, girlfriend, or buddies, then obey the rules.

I am not going to live through the shit I have just to have some dumb SOB kill me at a public range.

I get that but calling in police & co, s unnecessarily could result in an unnecessary perception by them that these ranges are problem areas & potential liabilities.... unintended consequences can also be a bitch

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying....Anybody handling any gun at any time in an unsafe manner at the range should be confronted!

& That's the difference between you & I....Its a violation of a range guideline not a crime as far as I know so I sure wouldn't stick my nose into supporting yet another stupid NJ restriction on gun owners....
Besides rules and regulations.... simply put......kids in attendance.....you and your homes decide..... F**K them lets shoot center fire who will say anything.....I would of not of been so understanding....As for discharging a center fire in NJ any where besides a range that allows....I am sure a few of my friends would have a issue with that for sure.....greg, you are part of the problem here....with all due respect
