Back in the late 70's early 80's, when Sabot slugs first came out and Hastings was advertising their fully rifled barrels there was a sentence in their add that caught my attention. Back in those days smoothbore barrels and Foster slugs were said to be no good past 40 yards, LOL. Anyways, what the Hastings add said, was that accuracy could be improved 350% with the use of a rigidly mounted scope. What this told me was that I didn't really need a rifled barrel. I drilled and tapped my first shotgun receiver in 1980, a Remington 870 with a smoothbore slug barrel. Results were amazing. Today, we don't even consider carrying a rifled barreled slug gun unless the ranges might exceed 125 yards. and we practice up to 125 yards regularly with smoothbore slug barrels and foster slugs because foster slugs are cheap enough to do so. Son holds the record for a shot with a smoothbore slug barrel, a doe in a field at 128 lasered yards in front of 2 witnesses who said they couldn't possibly make the shot. One shot, bang flop, this, with an Ithaca 37, 1963 vintage purchased used by me in 1967 and a Deerslayer barrel I purchased for it about 2 years later.
