I used to shoot a mossberg with remington sluggers and could keep them in a pie plate at 75-100 yds pretty consistently. I really got tired of shooting that gun as the recoil was one of the worst I have ever shot. I now shoot a 20 gauge and am much happier.
Yup! I had a synthetic stock 50O in 12ga. Light as hell. I would shoot the original winchester bri sabot slugs in it. Kept groups under 5" at 40 yards. It was a great gun for deer hunt it rattled your brain. Lol.

Back in the late 70's early 80's, when Sabot slugs first came out and Hastings was advertising their fully rifled barrels there was a sentence in their add that caught my attention. Back in those days smoothbore barrels and Foster slugs were said to be no good past 40 yards, LOL. Anyways, what the Hastings add said, was that accuracy could be improved 350% with the use of a rigidly mounted scope. What this told me was that I didn't really need a rifled barrel. I drilled and tapped my first shotgun receiver in 1980, a Remington 870 with a smoothbore slug barrel. Results were amazing. Today, we don't even consider carrying a rifled barreled slug gun unless the ranges might exceed 125 yards. and we practice up to 125 yards regularly with smoothbore slug barrels and foster slugs because foster slugs are cheap enough to do so. Son holds the record for a shot with a smoothbore slug barrel, a doe in a field at 128 lasered yards in front of 2 witnesses who said they couldn't possibly make the shot. One shot, bang flop, this, with an Ithaca 37, 1963 vintage purchased used by me in 1967 and a Deerslayer barrel I purchased for it about 2 years later.

Howard Brant remember him?

I sure do, he once said that the New Jersey hunter was his own worst enemy, and he was right. Remember Lou Salvato and his Paterson Evening News column, "in the Great Outdoors"? I used to take the #22 bus in Hawthorne for 25 cents to Paterson and go to his store on West Broadway to buy pellets for my Crossman 760 pump pellet gun in the early 60's. I've been experimenting with smoothbore slug guns since the late 60's and at times have even used them in NYS in deference to a rifle because the mountain laurel was so thick in the balsam swamp we hunted. They are definitely underrated by people in the know, LOL.

Yes I do remember " In the Great Outdoors ". I believe it was written by Lou's father Jimmy Salvato owner of Paterson Rod & Gun. I'm shooting Brenneke KO's out of my Mossberg 535 Turkey Thug with red dot. Just replace the turkey choke with an IC. 4" groups out to 75 yds. Devastating results. The pistol grip stock also makes for easy shooting from a tree stand.

The Newark news, became the star ledger, when I began my printing career,I worked at the ledger, howard was my hero. For his passion of the outdoors. He said buckshot is only good to 45yds,I can do 80.Back in the day everyone used buckshot, then the slug was introduced, there were no rifled barrels, the six day guys back then were,ah,can we say you suk? Guy's with smooth bore with bead sights=cripple unrecovered.I remember the change f&w made, rifled sights now you idiots!

Don't mean to hijack this post, but I've been wanting to ask the same question. I have a Mossberg 12Ga. 24" smoothbore with a scope that I bought 25 years ago and want to take it to the range. What shells are the best start?

years ago I used one. groups varied widely depending on what load was used. with brenneke, or buck hammers I could get good groups to 100 from the bench, open sight. The achilles heel in your system I see is the tapped for scope action. Theres just not enough meat in a shotgun action to hold screws through the forces of recoil on a slug gun. Ive been there done that with just about every gimmick and method that came along to mount a scope to a slug gun. Biggest waste of time and money I have done for hunting yet. Frustration and hardship O plenty. I have an older (Bought used late 70's) smooth slug barrel with sights you can use to try. great with open sights, but if you want a scope on a shotgun, cantilever is the only way. I never had luck with those B square side mounts either. I spent years and a fortune ruining several good shotguns trying.

You are correct, it was Lou Salvato's Dad's column, I get the names mixed up, as I dealt with Lou for years & years, also his son Jim.

I have found, after playing with many smoothbore slug guns over the years, that if you try plain old 2 & 3/4 inch Winchester foster slugs, you won't need to try anything else. Many years ago, again in a Hastings rifled barrel advertisement they claimed that if you used Foster slugs in their rifled barrel best results were obtained with Winchester fosters as they were slightly larger diameter than the other fosters and aligned better in the barrel. There must be some truth to that.

I used 12 gauge smoothbore slugguns for years and years, but a few years ago, my daughter asked me to sight in her sluggun for her because she was busy, so I obliged her. It's a 20 gauge Remington 1100 pre 74 built on a 12 gauge frame. It was like shooting a cap gun, recoil was literally absent, and right then and there I decided I needed a 20 gauge smoothbore sluggun. So I rescued a beater Winchester 1300 from a pawn shop somewhere in Minnesota, and made it to my liking. If I use a sluggun now a days, this is the one I use. I always said, life's to short to hang with an ugly woman, or hunt with an ugly gun. Incidentally, never saw any advantage on the 12 over a 20 as far as killing deer.

took a single shot 20ga 28" mod barrel and turned it into a great slug gun.drilled and tape 2 holes and added scope mnting rail.added a 2-5 scope,a little camo paint and a sling and it was game on.could not believe how great this gun shot.

I have a 20ga 870 express I've seen no difference in accuracy between my rifled barrel and smooth with the appropriate slugs in each I'm not sure if it's mental or if what always wondered
