Now that I have my FID I want to take the NJ Hunter exam with a view to doing some pheasant hunting Fall '07. Does anyone know what the practical session involves? I can't seem to find any info on the F&W website....

I think the current testing system gives you a DVD and workbook to review at home before taking the test. Just stop by any sporting goods store (ie Ramsey Outdoors, Effinger, maybe Dicks) and get the workbook & DVD.
The practical session involves walking thru the woods with your shotgun and displaying safe hadling. Then you shoot 2 clay pidgeons and they evaluate your ability to safely operate a firearm.

They give you a wooden shotgun to carry on the walk around
2 shots at clay birds hit or miss as long as you dont point the weapon at someone you pass. The only exception I saw was a little girl who was really to small to hold a gun up . It was common sense but she was disappointed. You can walk in the day of and take the test. It seems they lose some of the registrants info anyway.

It seems they lose some of the registrants info anyway.You'll be at a local WMA, etc .... so they will be puppies, launched from a portable trap right near you, and at slow speed. Don't worry about the shooting part at all. If you bring you own gun, use a open choke, not a trap choke. If I remember right, you can not bring your own ammo.
And, as others have said, they really are looking for safety. And they want to help you.

Not that it's a big deal but you have to shoot a ground target too. There is a written test after the field walk. It's really easy...one of those no. 2 pencil tests.
They will score it right there and give you a temporary card on the spot that you can take to a store and use to get a licence immediately. A more "official" looking certificate comes in the mail soon after too. They take it away when you get the a license.
Make sure your name on the FID, Hunter Certification and your official resident documents, like a DL or passport are identical. You know the drill.

Well I'm now booked in for April. Gives me time to read up on everything. I was a bit surprised yesterday when the FGW website timed out on me while I was applying. I emailed them and was even more surprised to get a reply this morning WITH AN APOLOGY...WOW....A State department that actually cares....I;'m impressed...[up]

Before we went to cable our comp used to time out all the time. Frustrating when your doing research or just reading .
