I am having trouble finding ammo for yotes. Since I bought a $200 tactical light with a red filter to mount on one of my guns I am psyced for 'yotes.

I called Ray's ; Ramsey Outdoors and Davis Sport.

Davis was the only one with 30-06 150 grain FMJ. If I get that I can use my Rem 700. It has a matte finish so I don't need to camo it. I have plenty of soft points in various sizes, but I don't want a 3" diameter exit wound. I am not sure how big the exit wound will be with a FMJ.

Ray's has the CCI Stingers. I would have to camo my Marlin 25. I would also have to take it to the range to adjust the scope. I set it for regular LR's to shoot silouettes. The Stingers are about 15 clicks different at 50 yds, Also I don't get that good of a group the Stingers. I have shot 'yotes with the Stingers in the past. Shot placement becomes as critical as with deeer hunting. Pelt damage is a non issue because the hyper velocity non jacketed hollow points break up making several wound tracts. There is no exit wound.

Third choice is to use my 835 with the turkey set up. My turkey choke is rated for lead only. No one has 3.5" shells in lead bigger than #4. I am not fond of the idea of multiple small pellet holes in the pelt.

Since I have to use the shot gun in NJ I will probably rig it up on there at least until after Monday. The light will have to go on top of the scope. On the rifles it goes under the barrel.

what type of terrain you hunting ? what the surroundings like ?

Sounds like you need a new rifle to do the yotes. '06 is a bit heavy in any weight bullet and the .22 is a bit light from what I know of yote hunting.

Might want to consider something like the new 17's or an old traditional would be along the lines of a .243, .222, .223, 6MM.

Just a thought. Besides, you get a new gun out of it:p.:D

I killed loads yotes with stingers in the hills of NW Ark. & introduced a yotes to them here in NJ too. But you better be with 40 yds. A head shot drops them like a ton of bricks!!!!!!!! Don't know how they would trying a body dhot. In Wyo I used 30-30 or 22-250. bang dead dog! LOL
When snaring a 22 short is all you need. Yotes aren't all that tough.

I like the 22-250 and the 243, wish I could use it here for yotes. I would definately go if I could. Shooting a coyote with pheasant load is just ridiculous to me. This is a rifle sport. If I was going small I would use 17 remington. If I was going small at closer range I would use 17 hmr or 22 hornet.

I have a deal with Gunnyfern for a .223 Mini14 thaT never seems to materilize. At this point I need to go with what I have.

Try shooting Hevi Shot's Dead Coyote Loads in your 835.
I use them in my 3.5" Browning with full choke.
They are 'T' size and are legal in New Jersey for Coyotes. But the way I read it...They are only legal during the Permit coyote season.

Why is the 30-06 too much gun for yotes? I don't think the caliber is as important as the bullet type you choose.

If you want to save the pelt, I'd think you should use a harder bullet...you want minimal expansion, but enough to do the job without ruining the pelt.

I'm open to suggestions because I'm in the same boat. I plan on using my 30-06 in NY and PA sometime soon (once NJ season is over)...and was honestly going to use my 165 grain BTSPs...simply because I know it's plenty of bullet and the gun is already zeroed out to 250 with it. First year hunting yotes, so I guess I'll learn as I go when I see the results of the damage.

my brother shot a yote with that exact load and blow a 5 inch hole in it bowhunter
With a FMJ or with the BTSP??? The FMJ will not musroom, but will still make an exit wound. I don't know how big.

I used Stingers to kill them with a body shot. You have to hit the equivelent to the vital area on a deer. In addition to that you need snow because they don't drop in their tracks and ther is not much of a blood trail. Your right 40-50 yards is the max not only for power, but for accuracy. In my Marlin 25 the Stingers don't group that well.

Try shooting Hevi Shot's Dead Coyote Loads in your 835.

I thought about that. I need to get the HeviShot rated full choke and the T HeviShot. What kind of pattern do you get at 40 yards?

Since its .30 cal, i would think you'd be able to work up a load with a much lighter bullet than 165 grains, that's just overkill. If your gonna do it right, there's only gonna be one hole, and that's going in. If your just thumpin them for the sake of thumpin them, then use something like a .416 Rigby or maybe even a .500 Nitro Express, now those will thump them.

You could load excellerator's in your 06. 55 grain 22 caliber bullet in a sabot. They rip out of the o6. I would buy a new gun though. No bigger than 25 caliber like 2506 if your stuck on 06 bases calibers. I like the smaller faster bullets for the smaller lighter game. I still can't believe that we can only use bird shot for coyotes during the season but we can use muzzleloaders, bows, and shotgun slugs for them during deer season. That makes no sense to me. I would take a 20 ga slug gun over the birdshot any day or even my 45 caliber ml

Yeah I wish I could use my H&R slug gun for them here in NJ.

As far as the rifle situation, I'm only using the 30-06 because it's all I have. So I'm just trying to make due with what I have for now, and if I really, really want to get fully into it, I'll spring for a predator specific gun (which will require far more research on my part).

Right now, I just want to get out and get a few...so far enjoying it, but haven't got one yet (been night hunting)...seeing plenty of foxes and some yotes...but just not within shotgun t shot range.

So for now, what are the 06 options? It took me some time to get the gun sighted in for this BTSP (tried a ton of various bullets). I'm not really looking to spend days and days at the range going through $300 in ammo to find a one season solution. Maybe just stick with the 165s and giant holes? [confusedagain]
