Totally disproved the "no bananas on fishing boat" myth yesterday
over the course of my 52 years, I have encountered numerous superstitious captains that had completely forbidden any banana or banana-related products onto their boat. None were more committed to this theory than Captain Bouncer Smith - out of Miami a few years back when he put my son and I onto our first of two sailfish each. He went as far as to ask if we were wearing fruit of the loom products with a banana pictured on the label, or had any Banana Boat sunscreen. I actually had to take a banana boat sport sunblock out of my bag and put in the car.
So yesterday - I invited a special someone on a shad trip on my boat as I had taken the day off due to the amazing forecast and fact that I have been nailing the shad from shore pretty good of late. What I had not experienced this year was the sort of wild shad fishing out of my boat up North of Bushkill where I usually fish. I had put together a decent boat trip out of Easton a few weeks back - but it's been really bad at my favorite place.
So she shows up, bikini, and sunscreen, ready to catch some rays. I was just hoping to put her on a few shad - not expecting much. I also noticed she had Banana Boat suntan oil. Rather than tell her to leave the sunscreen in the Jeep and try to explain the superstition - I decided it was better for my longer term goals beyond catching some shad to just not mention it...
Well - it was all out blitz fishing. Started on anchor at 3PM, I had to quit by 5:45PM as the dog had to pee and my elbow tendonitis was burning like fire and her wrists were sore. So basically in less than three hours we had more than 50 hookups and couldn't even guess how many ended in the net. Mostly 4.5 lb to nearly 6lb roe with many followers. Basically a continual stream of double-hookups with only a few brief (and welcome) lulls.
So there you have it - banana boat sunscreen will NOT ruin your fishing trip. (I will not bring any real bananas though) [lol][lol][lol]
