Hunting an unposted swamp or wood lot along the turnpike or 287 is no different than what happened here. I'm not saying I agree with what he did but hey, everyone else does it, just not in that particular spot.

thats how I feel about it also.
there is way too much trespassing that goes on in this state.
and IF they really cared a simple law as they have in Ohio could prevent ALOT of it.

Written permission in hand on any piece of property your hunting OR your in violation and lose your stuff as well as hunting priv for 2 years.

yet the way our current trespass laws are getting a 25 dollar fine doesnt do crap to stop it

If you've hunted long enough you have done something that you may not be proud of or something that could be considered "grey area" weather you knew it or not....it doesn't make it right.

That being said there's no doubt in my mind he didn't know he was doing something wrong. It's a federal reserve it can be lumped into the same category legally as hunting Yellowstone. ....and we all know how that turned out for Don Lewis...

Actually the compendium clearly states no public hunting in zone 50 with the exception of permit park hunting. He lives in Englishtown, not Deleware, he knew full well be wasn't supposed to be hunting where he was. His bravado told him if he got caught he could play the dumb card. NJ game codes, season limits, zone boundaries, season dates, etc.. apply no more in Gateway National Park than they do in any other tract of federally owned land. That buck was well known locally, as is the 12 in there. He deserves to be fined, but not jailed imo...
I think that's a pretty accurate assessment. I think it's beyond naive to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and swallow the story that he had no idea where he was or what the regs are.
Especially given all the hunting experience this guy has. Looks like his taxidermy collection is bested by only Cabela's.

That's not quite true given this is Federal land. Whole other ball of wax. Neither are right, but the implications here are worse given the Feds are now involved.

I agree something needs to be done. I grew up on a tiny 5.5 acre piece of land, and we'd have to tear down tree stands every other year or so. On only 5.5 acres..... I kid you not.

yes but isn't a second violation automatic loss of privileges for 5 years?
Yup:

23:7-1. Trespassing prohibited; posting notice; private notice; penalties
23:7-1. A person who trespasses on the lands of another for the purpose of hunting, fishing, trapping, or taking wildlife, or attempting to hunt, fish, trap, or take wildlife, after notice bearing the name of the owner, occupant, or lessee thereof, forbidding the trespass, has been conspicuously posted by the owner, occupant, or lessee with intervisible signs displayed not fewer than ten to a mile along the exterior boundaries and at all roads, trails and rights-of-way entering such land, or after having been forbidden so to trespass by the owner, occupant, or lessee, shall be liable to a civil penalty of not less than $100.00 nor more than $200.00 for the first offense, and not less than $200.00 nor more than $500.00 and the suspension of all license certificates required, and all privileges, to take or possess wildlife for a period of five years, in addition to any applicable penalty prescribed pursuant to R.S.23:3-22, for each subsequent offense.

i think the large silent majority on this site dont care at all, they want this guy to get nailed to the wall just because its interesting, then they will go back in September to hunting behind the soccer field and parking in their friends drive way.

Wow,,,, you must know me!! Yep that's exactly how I feel about it except you got the soccer field wrong. It's an old folks home for the deaf and blind. Know where it's at??

it is what is...maybe an industrial park with 3 acres in between or a development with a big back yard that backs against a town park or a municipal lot with some woods behind it. guys do it all day, they act like its their secret spot, shoot deer and pretend its hunting. a couple months ago a guy was posting about shooting deer in front of a feeder near his pool. I personally gave him a hard time and he cried about all his reasons for doing it...whatever...hunting is what you make it, im not good at and i dont get out as much as i would like, but i enjoy being out when i do. i know its frustrating when you try and do it right and guys shoot deer in their back yards or behind the water treament plant cuz a piece of the fence came down...enjoy yourselves.

Anybody ever post a buck on here, that wasn't taken 100% legitimately, with full permission to hunt where it was taken? I am proud to say I have not... I would rather take a 120" 8pt perfectly legit, over a 150" buck I had to compromise principals and laws in the process. I love big bucks and I cannot lie, but the only way to be proud of your accomplishment is to play by the rules... Otherwise - you are just cheating yourself and will never feel accomplished...

I have....Twp property... big blocks of corporate land etc...not in a decade or more but I justified it wasn't posted...in other cases security guards gave me the OK... so I took that as permission. Another spot I hunted near the house I was given the combination to a security gate by a guy who worked regularly at the railroad switching station. I regularly ran into township police as well as Conrail cops and never had a problem.... but was I 100% not a chance.I just figured if someone who worked there said its OK....that's good enough for me.

Funny thing is before I moved to this area I hunted public land...and that's where I'm back now. Would I go into a park or someone's private property? No..and never would.

its amazing what people will do for a nice buck. I could never understand how hunting illegally can be rewarding always having to look over your shoulder and worrying about getting caught. I truly like to enjoy the woods and my time on a tree. I take hunting big deer seriously but it doesn't always have to be measured by rack size. I just focus and hunt the most mature buck in my area and im happy with that. If a buck has age, I don't care if its 110" or 160". I know of and have worked in areas were big bucks abound and shooting a P&Y buck is fairly easy, ill pass on the "kill" and focus on a "hunt". Would be more than happy to "spot burn" some illegal areas where some big P&Y bucks live for those wanting to hunt that way!! I have traveled all over the country hunting big bucks but if I could hunt anywhere solely based on the size of bucks that ive seen or known, some areas in Bergen, Passaic, and union county would be my first choice!

I hunt public land and one spot that is private, a backyard where the deer are wreaking havoc on the landscaping, in fact I shot a doe while sitting in a blind right next to the swing set, but hunting for me is about filling my freezer for the summer and not so much about hanging racks on the wall, so I hope this putz gets all the law allows and more.

I hunt 100% on my clubs property out in pa or the Newark watershed in jersey. I can't imagine hunting and having to worry about police/landowners coming to get me. No thanks. The biggest bucks I've ever seen are in a 10 acre patch of woods across from my parents house in south Plainfield. No way would I even think of hunting there. I've gotten some great pictures of those deer though.

i do not condone the actions of the sandy hook 'poacher' but i do know him from meeting him at the deer show and he killed the best deer i was ever after, and it was on public land.wonder if it would have been a curse to kill a public land 140 and asked my self what next.
