I have an email out to them as to what is their "official position" on waterfowling as it pertains to the proposed "Marine sanctuary"

Jim has our lobby firm on it as well as many of his constituents...even spoke to the Lieutenant Governor.

I think right now there's a lot of "firepower" on the fishing side of things to stop this altogether...so that's been the primary angle of attack....right now I haven't received any information on their official stance on anything fishing or hunting nor has anyone else....and the information they provide on this "Marine sanctuary" is very vague and fluffy...so I think the ultimate plan of attack will be decided upon when we receive what their official stances are and what is in the entire proposal....

The residents of the Navasink and Shrews are foaming at the mouth over this. The massive project at the Highlands Marina is also going to house hundreds of city folk who will not want to hear gun shots on Saturday morning. This should not be taken lightly. Support RFA & Garden State Waterfowlers and have your voice heard.

Isn't there a gun club in rumsen on the water though? I forgot the name but I'm pretty sure there is or at least was, what's going to happen them shooting? And I always wondered if they are required to use steel if they are literally on the water edge like that.
I assume the commercial guys in the area will have something to say about this also.

Little update:

I have heard directly from a senior officer within the Navesink marine heritage Associatio(via email) and all I can say is they have felt the pressure of several organizations and requested to work with us(GSWA) as well as the RFA and New Jersey waterfowlers to include verbiage in this proposal that would preserve the duckhunting heritage for this region...

we also have tentatively scheduled a face-to-face meeting with them so we can begin this process....

Not ready to take a victory lap on this one yet but it seems like it's moving in the right direction...

And just so you guys know a member of Gardenstate waterfowlers has been present The last two meetings where New Jersey's waterfowl regulations are proposed....and his input has been a strong influence.

Please let us know when you learn exactly what there intent is of this preserve, if fishing and hunting is allowed what exactly is going to be so "preserve like" about it? Not trying to be ingnotant but I suppose I don't know exactly what there definition of preserve is and what is and isn't allowed.
Hell, if there goal is to improve water quality in the area and overall improve the habitat then I'm sure we will be all for it as long as fishing and hunting is not effected. I just don't exactly understand there mission and what they are trying to accomplish.
I am hoping tomorrow at the decoy show there will be some sort of petition or literature about this to get more people educated on this and informed what exactly is going on especially since it's in the same area in question.
Thanks for the updated info.

Update : GSWA was well represented at the recent Navesink marine heritage Association NMS presentation ..myself Capt Brian Rice and Jimmy Donofrio as well as over 150 more concerned fisherman clammers and waterfowlers were in attendance. The response was overwhelming to say the least and to say this "National Marine sanctuary" received some staunch opposition would be an understatement!

So have they actually come out with any plans or proposals of what the restrictions or improvements would be? Or is this just a "hey let's make a park and then we will surprise everyone with the new rules" type of deal? Sounds to me like everyone including bathers, jet-skiers, hunters, fishermen and business owners should have serious concern. Are they going to eliminate recreational boating? What about clammers and crabbing? I know there are a lot of boat up bars in that area that would take a serious hit. These could be people that the organization's opposing this "park" would want to have on their side.

it really doesn't matter at this point because it's going nowhere it has no local support....

he gave us some hunky Dory plan of cleaning the water and blah blah and everybody just saw it for what it was and he was like a Sheep amounts a pack of wolves...he couldn't answer specifics he didn't have a specific outline he has no background in fisheries management or biology he just got destroyed.....Jimmy Donofrio basically disemboweled him in two minutes...

Been following this over at Stripersonline. Great job stepping up to the plate!

Spoke to my buddy last week who's involved with a lot of marine biology and water quality stuff and he also told me this guy is a joke and has no education and facts on what he's attempting to talk about. Glad so many showed up from all different interest groups.

Great Job Dave! I wish I was closer to attend. After reading up on this it sounds insane. Just another scumbag with an agenda trying to take something away from us. Great job stepping up and rallying the troops!

" Van Hemmen, a marine engineer and author who’s held public sessions on the proposal elsewhere in Monmouth County in recent days and said he’s hoping to hold more."
Post a message when you hear of new public meetings on this to be held. I'm sure many folks here would attend given a heads up.

I just cannot believe that someone would actually ASK for MORE government intrusion by inviting the feds to take over and regulate more land here. Oh, wait, this is New Jersey.. never mind.

This is why we need the GSWA. Great job Dave,Brian,Jim & others who went down there.
Thank you guys.

It would be “a special area with special goals, and “the public gets to set the goals for the sanctuary and to propose the sanctuary designation to congress,” the statement says

Did he mention his "special goals" or are all of his rich New Yorkers living on the water going to set there goals based on there own agenda? What a tool, he has no facts to back him up.
