Fill your workbook and practice before. Last year a guy using a crossbow shoot 1 yard off the target at 15 yds. I think it was his first time shooting that, they were using a metal detector to find the bolt. Was weird.

Complete the workbook, the video is nonsense. There are online practice tests that are pretty much exactly the same as the test you will be given. Don't shoot your eye out !

If you've done the workbook and are prepared for the written test, you only need to be certain that you can put 3 in the deer vitals on a 3-d target at 15 yards. That's the distance you'll shoot from. Last thing you want to do is show up and DQ because you were off target. They don't forgive on that requirement. Since xbows became legal, many guys use one. They even bring tripods and shoot from a rest. It looks stupid but they pass. Be sure you are shooting well and your gear is up to snuff. If it is, you are golden. Good luck.
If a guy fails with a tripod and a crossbow he should be banned from hunting for life.

Big thing that some people over look is your arrow tip. Make sure you have field points that screw in and that are not glued in like target points. When I was young and taking my shooting test I remember this guy got DQ'd because none of his arrows had a normal insert that was capable of having a Broadhead.

I don't think crossbows should be permitted for the test. You should be required to draw and shoot a trad bow or compound accurately to pass....Once you pass if you want to hunt with an Xbow and its legal, then have at it. But the test should not be crossbows. If I take the Muzzy exam, I'm required to use their rifles with a patch n ball system, measure the powder, poor it in, then the patch n ball, then seat it, and then shoot.....not just drop 2 pellets of pyrodex down the tube with a Sabo ontop.

I took that test in 1974, with a recurve and cedar arrows. (I was too small to pull a compound of the day) Test was at black knights even then, class was colliers mills where the LEO range is now. Same with shotgun and trapping (trapping was rifle permit back then)

Thanks- I never would have thought about this. Luckily all of my points are screw in.

If it's going to be legal to hunt with them it's legal to test with them. Could say that if you are going to use a compound to hunt with you should test with a longbow. If it wasn't for the crossbow being an option to test and hunt with there are a lot of youths that wouldn't be hunting until their mid-to-late teens, if at all considering the other alternatives to hunting at that age. Having said that though, shooting with a crossbow and a tri-pod at 20 yards is pretty easy.

How many people honestly know you were allowed to test with a tripod? Not something I would have even thought about.

That said, I don't see a problem with little kids, but that's seriously turbo-weak if an adult shows up with a tripod.
I did "Like" your post as I agree it's kind of hard to imagine not being able to shoot at 20 yards with the crossbow but the reality is that crossbows are seldom shot by a standing individual like you would a compound in a tree stand. It is more of a "gun" then a bow in how it is shot. As such, I think it should be tested in the same manor as how it would be used in the field. Anyway, we hijacked this guys thread enough...lol. Sorry man. Don't sweat the test. My 9 year old just started reading it and she already had a 75% without even studying based on the sample tests. She took it again and had a 95%.

Not hijacked at all- it is all good stuff, and thanks again for the info.
