Filled out paperwork January 16th 2016, fingerprints completed January 22nd 2016, both references received paperwork today February 7th 2016. This is in matawan nj. I'm gonna shoot in the dark and say by end of February.

It has been 36 days since all paper work has been turned in to the PD. Got a letter yesterday that one reference did not turn in their reference letter as of yet. I spoke with the individual, who is a LEO, and he had personally dropped it off back in January to the PD. So it must have gotten lost in the shuffle. Now I need him to go back in and re complete the form. So I am assuming it is going to be delayed that much more. I have heard that Roxbury is usually very good and they have all been very nice in my dealings with them. Not angry with the PD, just the wait is killing me.

Bergen County, Lodi.
Dropped application for 1 handgun at PD on Jan. 18, got the fingerprints done on Jan. 28, I got a call yesterday Feb. 26 from the PD that everything was ready. Total of 28 days after fingerprints,,, wow!!

Update on 3/8/16:
Well, got my Beretta 92A1 customised with a fair amount of Wilson Combat upgrades and looks and shoots like a dream, and since the rifle/shotgun permit comes along with the paperwork, I bought the Stag Arms AR-15 Model 2 with some aftermarket furniture added to it and the time at the range is getting interesting :)
Peace to all.

Applied 13 January 2016. Had to wait till 26 January for fingerprints. Cherry Hill fingerprinting place was that backed up.
Turned fingerprint papers back in to police department on 29 January. Picked up FID on 29 February.
Westampron Police Department was quick and easy no issues with them at all.[up]

So- going on 4 months here through the NJSP, so I started making some phone calls. I spoke to the officer on charge and he told me everything was in order that they were just extremely busy with a very high number of requests.

Two days later I get a call around 8:00 at night, it was the officer who is in charge of my background check. She tells me that since they are so busy they now have patrol officers helping out on a part time basis, usually 1 day a week. And that she has been trying to get a hold of one of my references for over 6 weeks but he hasn't answered his phone or called back.

Long story short they had the wrong number, so I gave them the correct number and checked back with my contact and he confirmed that he did receive the call that evening.

I will call again this week to check on the status but don't expect them ready for another month or so.

I applied for my FID back in January, was told 3 months or so. Quick question, i've heard different opinions on calling into to local PD. Some have said to call on a somewhat frequent basis, others have said never call because your application will go to the bottom of the pile. My references have all been contacted a couple weeks ago. What advice can you give as far as inquiring? I don't want to come off as "anxious" and cause more of a wait time but with relatives that live out of state, explaining this draconian process of obtaining a firearm in Soviet NJ is aggravating. Thanks all

Absolutely call. Be polite and just say you are calling to make sure they have your references and to make sure they have everything they need. Get status, names and dates from them.

Completely agree with bloodtrails, and if you feel they are jerking you around, or do put you on the bottom of the pile it would then be time to escalate and start up the chain of command.
