Bacon I like yours there. Mine didn't have that mallard tail curl but good to know that there are a few more around than I thought. Still think I'd like to have one as a mount. Also seems the colorations can vary quite a bit. Thanks for the replies. Well all except bunker farts the retarded mallard[hihi].

Thanks man, yea with my bird it was a mallard with a mix of black duck, the bottom half of the head shows the black duck in it. Ive noticed pictures from other guys, it's the other way around, mostly black duck body with mallard mixed in

You'll get one again

A lot of times what appears as a hybrid is a mallard w/o full plumage. Most hybrids look like a Black Duck with white in the speculum and some green on the head.

i wish id taken a couple more pics of it. It had that black duck plumage you see around the neck on its belly. the tail end had the white trim a mallard drake has initially thought it was a young drake but the size was much lager than the pair of mallards in the pic. until i picked it up i was almost sure id shot a mallard hen. While not a guarantee the fatty deposits were much more orange in color than that of the other two but that could be just a matter of diet. Cleaning other birds it seems that the black ducks fat and meat color is a bit different. Correct me if I am wrong.

I had a black duck mounted a few years ago. Shot it at Spruce Run. The Taxidermist notice a little green patch on the head when he mounted it for me. I didn't even notice until he delivered it and showed me the area.

Some things I've read from biologists says that any amount of white on the speculum of a black duck indicates a mallard hybrid, others say it may be a recessive gene to have a faint white line. General consensus says if the white is highly pronounced it's a hybrid
