The entire point of the hunt is to cull bear numbers, so there's really no big deal in shooting an 88lb bear. Congratulations, I say.

That said, I entirely disagree with those who say it's "okay because it was a kid" - these same people say the same thing about kids shooting small button bucks etc... In my opinion, children need to be taught the invaluable lesson of self-restraint in life, not just in hunting, but in all disciplines. My 2¢.

congrats to the young man he got a clean kill on a bear and got some life long memories with his dad it's not aways the size of the animal for most dad's in the woods it's about the time spent with their sons or daughters I'm 55 years old and still remember my first hunt with my dad don't steal that from this young man and his dad congrats again to both of you

Well said by all WTG son it's not how big the bear was it's the time you put into the hunt!!!!!!!!!

Plenty of time to teach kids about hunting and life in general. First you have to get them interested, then you can teach them

To each his own, I would never let my son or daughter pull the trigger on a cub. A bear is a bear is Bull Sh!t....you don't shoot fawns and you don't shoot Cubs, kid or not..
Lol... If that's your profile picture? Then I doubt you have let many cubs or fawns go by... You probably eat the entrails of everything you kill!!! I say congrats to the kid. All bears should be shot. They are becoming more and more dangerous towards humans, pets and deer every year..

There is nothing to say other than congrats. I get a lot of pictures of Bears when that is what I am set up for. However Monday when my Bears came in on schedule I had a yambag 50 yards in front of me randomly shooting at the pack of 5 needless to say once they broke up cause he did not do anything but f*%$ me. I couldn't tell the difference between a 100 lbs bear or a 200 lbs bear so I did not shoot. At 90 yards all separate they all look like black cotton balls. Did I want to kill a bear absolutely but I knew what I wanted and decided to pass leaving me with nothing. Your son however ever knew what he wanted and took it. So CONGRATULATIONS to him. Sleep well knowing he had more brains than the a$$ bag that set up by me.

On a second note is there a difference in a full grown man doing a hero pose over the 30 lbs fawn he just killed or a kid standing next to his first black bear at 88lbs? You bet you the kid has something to be proud of while the full grown man is just a yambag taking a needless photo

I could care less if it weighed 88, 288, 588 or 28. Its one less S.O.B that's going tear the garbage apart, kill fawns or farm animals. This is a standing depredation hunt, you are supposed to shoot the first bear you can. 88 pounds should be good eating.....
How many didn't follow that directive? I'd be willing to bet there were quite a few.

It's simple,it's a management hunt, take the first bear you see, end of story. Congrats to the kid and anyone who took a bear. Oh and good luck for those hunting the extension.

Gotta disagree. We are entitled to our own opinions. I agree they are tough to judge. However, 88 lbs is small at 10 yards or 100 yards. It is like shooting a fawn. I would not shoot smaller than 200 lb. That is me. I passed on several bears this week. Many over 150. Like I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion....88 lbs is a cub. Not for me...

Too bad this site does not have a "your an ahole" button.

Part of the equation of better deer hunting is the removal of the bears. On the farm I hunt, they have taken over the most-dense cover where the deer USED to bed. Think back a few years ago to when there were much less bears, much less coyotes, with the same amount of idiots recklessly killing everything they saw (recall the truckload of button bucks thread). I saw more deer even with the over-long seasons and gluttonous bag limits. The increase in bears and coyotes was/is just more insult to injury.
