I am in agreement that the illegal offroading needs to stop just like the illegal dumping needs to stop. I hate both just about as much as anything. I am constantly picking trash up in the woods.

I believe if we stand by and do nothing then when everything is gone we will stand there and be like hell the hell did this happen. As sportsmen does this argument sound familiar ie guns. A couple bad people get the rest of our rights restricted or taken away. This is same thing .
As for some hunters who say they don't mind walking and prefer the roads closed. How about the 80 year guy who has hunted the same spot since he was a kid and now can't drive close? Is it fair to him or her? They say number one thing that is causing hunting and fishing to be become obsolete is access. I hear it all the time this farm or that piece of woods is gone or posted that's why I don't hunt any more. It may not affect each individual person directly but collectively as sportsmen it affects all of us. We must stand together to fight for our rights whether it be access or for our guns.

Rdf I am all for more enforcement. They already a good size force however all I see is them driving around. I have never seen them write a ticket. They can pull people over just like a regular cop can. If they have a problem area like Jemima mount or the infamous quarter mile put signs at those spots and if someone disobey it they should get handed a hefty fine. I saw a whole pack of jeeps whack into puddles just to get stuck heading to the mount one saturday. You know they were going to climb it. All it would take is one park police to write 5 tickets and word will spread fast to stay the hell out of there. Or just put a cable across the sensitive areas that trucks are not supposed to be in anyways.

Lets cram this meeting. Alot of the problems come from lack of enforcement. I posted last week about busting a dumper, put a picture up, called the cops. They say it's still being investigated!!! What, you have a picture, you have a witness that's willing to testify. Park Police spend to much time on paved roads, get them in the woods, put up trail cams to catch people. One spot in our township is cleaned up once every couple of years, the day after it's cleaned tires show up. Put up a trail cam, have a Park Police officer hide in the woods.

I received this from one of my club reps who went to the Burlington Federation Meeting Last night.

First of all, I can not thank you enough for coming out to both learn about what's happening and your show of support for our push for fair access to our state's resources.

I am concerned that this is going to be a long and drawn out fight but the only way we are going to make any headway or obtain any measure of success is by standing together and continuing to make ourselves heard.

It's important that in addition to getting those phone calls and letters done that every one who is eligible to vote in New Jersey is registered and actually gets out there and votes in every election.

STOP WHARTON STATE FOREST ROAD CLOSURES NOW!!

Have you noticed brown fiberglass posts labeled 'No Motorized Vehicles' spring up around our public lands in Wharton State Forest (W.S.F.)? These closures are part of the State Park Service's new Motorized Access Plan, which was forged in secrecy in hopes of closing 58% of the roads in Wharton State Forest. This means we will lose access to 274 miles of roads to explore, to enjoy the beauty of nature and to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday stressors. This is first state park of several to have this type of M.A.P. implemented, closing public roads. We need to stop this before it goes any further, and gain access back to these roads on OUR STATE LAND, which we, the tax payers, pay for and have a right to enjoy.
This plan represents a blanket closure of virtually ALL narrow interior woods roads and non-through roads that lead to points of interest, a large amount at water’s edge, while citing motorized damage for the closures. Don't believe the hype. Irresponsible damage is already illegal and is quite simply an issue of enforcement and lack of maintenance.
Additionally, the explanations being given by the administration are NOT consistent with the types of roads being closed.
The remainder of the still open major roads will be 'rehabilitated' into wide, graded, orange gravel roads which will likely be dusty and heavily wash-boarded in short time with all traffic focused on so few roads. These wide graded roads, made of non-natural earth, represent a HUGE environmental impact themselves and will forever change the inherent charm of Wharton. This closed-door shift in policy is the largest and most negative change in the management of Wharton State Forest since it was purchased in 1957.
On 8/13/15, the Borough of Medford Lakes unanimously passed Resolution 83-15 opposing the Wharton Forest Motorized Action Plan (MAP). Following suit on 8/18/15 the Township of Medford passed resolution 155-2015. Other local towns bordering W.S.F. will be notified by B.M.L, encouraging them to follow suit. If you live in any of these towns, please attend the council meeting and voice your opposition to the plan. Email and call them to educate them and let them know exactly what we are losing. They need to hear our voices.

* You are concerned by the lack of transparency and public involvement in reaching this decision.
* You are concerned this closure is not consistent with the plan of conservation under which the Wharton Tract was originally bought and paid for by tax payers.
* You are concerned the closure of many of these 100+ year old roads will negatively impact accessibility of cultural and historic sites, which will in time be lost to NJ.
* You feel this closure unfairly affects veterans, the very old, the very young, and the disabled.
* You are concerned about the severe negative effects these closures will have on Hunting, Fishing, Canoeing/Kayaking, and many, MANY other forms of recreation.
* You are concerned about the State Park Service's intimate relationship with special-interest groups and you wonder if these closures may more closely represent the interests of these groups than the publicly stated purposes of the closures.
Be polite, be honest, but BE FIRM. This land BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE and motorized access should remain open for ALL to enjoy EVERYTHING it has to offer!

I think there is a sticky in the political section, but I gather not many people are seeing it. At lasts night meeting I red flagged on turtle eggs/snakes or whatever he mentioned. So like I say they close a road then deem it "protected"...Wait and see! That will be there take on it! We cannot give them one bit of freedom. This is a patrolling issue through and through....

This is from the state federation president.

Please put this info in all road closure threads.

This is how they are fighting it.

Headed out to Southhampton now, hope to see a bunch of you guys there.

They promised the Park Rangers would be there tonight to answer our enforcement questions....we will see.

Cindy W. Randazzo Director of Local Government Assistance announced last night that the 10 years she has been in this job she's only been to Wharton twice!! You'd think she'd have been there more than that just to show support of local government. To know what she's talking about since she's behind the closures. Typical Bureaucrats.

I agree and pointed out to her last night, that she should have done her homework and visited the site. Any good supervisor does their homework when a problem comes up, so they can speak intelligently, or make an intelligent decision on how to handle the problem. She is going by what people tell her, get out and observe, it's state car, state gas, and you can take comp time off for your travel time.

It was a long meeting, didn't get home until well after midnight. Didn't start out well, the DEP guys showed attitude, but that got lost further into the meeting.

A Lieutenant from the Park Police was there, and seemed sympathetic, and agreed that these guys need to spend more time in the woods and less time on State Roads handing out tickets. I pointed out that they have trail cam pics of illegal quads running up and down the roads, and in protected areas, why don't they put a Park Cop in there to bust these guys. If they see a trailer full of quads heading in check them, let them know they are being watched and will be cited.

There is another meeting in Winslow on Monday the 21st of Sept.

The draft Wharton State Forest Motorized Recreation Access Plan is under further review to ensure that it advances public safety, maximizes public access to the state forest, and protects the forest's unique environment. To ensure that visitors have an opportunity to provide input into the further development of the motorized access plan, DEP will be conducting a public meeting on Thursday, November 5 at 6:30 PM at Hammonton High School. In addition, in advance of the public meeting, stakeholder meetings are being scheduled with key constituent groups.

You must register by Wednesday, October 28 to attend the public meeting on November 5. To register, send an email to whartonmapcomments@dep.nj.gov or call (609) 704-1964.
