been hunting firearms for 30 years. on any random opening day monring i would normally see a ton of does and no bucks within range....my 14 yo son and i both bought bows over the summer, passed the test, and were all ready for opening day. we are in the stand around 515. by 535 am its still dark and i hear the unmistakable sound of a mature buck grunting up the hill. no wind, no sounds at all, except him. it was surreal. i whispered to my son "you know we cant take him so just be quiet and enjoy". we hear him carrying on for another 15min and at first light here he comes. A beautiful 10 pointer, 20 feet away from us....broadside with hise nose to the ground...a perfect opportunity! because we are on county land, we had to let him go. damn!!! over the next 2 hours we see about 10 doe, all too far to shoot. first time in a long time i saw a big buck at first light. regardless my kid is totally hooked. im taking off tomorrow to take him again. a bit cooler so should be a great morning.
even tho we didnt get one yesterday I want to thank everyone on this board that gave me advice over the summer.
