been hunting firearms for 30 years. on any random opening day monring i would normally see a ton of does and no bucks within range....my 14 yo son and i both bought bows over the summer, passed the test, and were all ready for opening day. we are in the stand around 515. by 535 am its still dark and i hear the unmistakable sound of a mature buck grunting up the hill. no wind, no sounds at all, except him. it was surreal. i whispered to my son "you know we cant take him so just be quiet and enjoy". we hear him carrying on for another 15min and at first light here he comes. A beautiful 10 pointer, 20 feet away from us....broadside with hise nose to the ground...a perfect opportunity! because we are on county land, we had to let him go. damn!!! over the next 2 hours we see about 10 doe, all too far to shoot. first time in a long time i saw a big buck at first light. regardless my kid is totally hooked. im taking off tomorrow to take him again. a bit cooler so should be a great morning.

even tho we didnt get one yesterday I want to thank everyone on this board that gave me advice over the summer.

Still a great experience. Congrats to you and your boy on getting in on early bow season together

he said they are on county land I think you need to shoot a doe first as per their rules.
Just made me read the regulations again and I don't see anywhere where it designates a location as to EAB

Right in the regulation sets -- "1st deer must be antlerless (not required for youth hunters)" in Bold print -- no mention of public or private land

I'm trying to figure out the wildlife hotline orphan thing.if you shoot a doe with fawns they become orphans so I guess you have to call thay number and there's hunter harassment in there it basically says if you drive deer and someone's hunting is hindered by it they can press charges and file a complaint yes if you disturb wildlife by making noises and gestures so yo buck or yo is a gesture wtf am I reading

Time spent with your son and an awesome encounter is what its all about. Memories. Too many people have to kill something every time out or they are not satisfied. That's why the hunting here in NJ is in the toilet. Hopefully you get another crack at him when the conditions are in you and your sons favor

we are on county land....as per the rulesbook......

*IN ALL SEASONS AND FOR EACH PERMIT, EVERY HUNTER MUST HARVEST AN ANTLERLESS DEER ON PARK PROPERTY BEFORE THEY CAN SHOOT AN ANTLERED DEER. (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SIX DAY FIREARM SEASON)*

i dont see anything anywhere that says "except for youth hunters"....hope im not wrong about this...he'll kill me so i cant tell him, lol

again, this text is on Hunterdon County's Controlled Hunting Program....it wont be found in the digest.

BUT, if any Hunterdon County Park hunters can confirm this, i would really appreciate it

Didn't realize it was a county park system hunt -- you definitely have a different set of rules -- When I read what you posted above it sounds like you did the right thing

Take a camera - you can still shoot him if he shows up again before you have a doe

Now I pose another question -- Do you have to take a doe from the park or can your 1st doe be from anywhere? I've never hunted county park land so I've never seen a set of their regs.

Enjoy the time with your son -- it's a special time that many do not understand

Has he harvested a firearm deer or will this be his 1st?

Yes it says that in the first paragraph, you MUST harvest an anterless deer on park property before they can shoot an anterlred deer.

you have read it 100% correctly.
Any hunter in the HCP has to shoot a doe in that park before he can harvest a buck , regardless of age.

Good thing is their are limited permits for all of them , so your chance at seeing him again is definetly good
