It does say all deer must be checked and removed from the woods is what they told me. if the deer was eaten and any remains have to be brought in to be checked. That also means if you find a deer dead with its antlers you have to take the deer in to be checked if your taking the antlers your tag goes on. Out of season then you better walk away or call the Co.

His response was if you shot a deer and you hit it. If you are going to let the deer sit so it dies, you have to Call and let the state know what has happened
If you are going to let it sit so it dies, and then go back and get it that night, yes. If you are going to wait until the next day to recover it, no. Your post prompted me to call just to be sure. So they already have all my contact info, and know what happened but according to the digest, and the person I spoke with on the phone, I followed the proper procedure.

But thanks for sicking the dogs on me to keep me honest. ;)

Congrats on a very nice buck. glad you recovered him and got it tagged. [up]

Bankobuck, why all the hate? Did I do something to you in a previous life? [confused]

Just so you know, I got further clarification on the issue. The call-in requirement is for a deer in your possession that has not been checked in...if you get caught with it, you're in trouble, that is why you have to call it in. There is no call-in requirement for a deer that has not been recovered. I didn't have the deer, and didn't even know IF the deer was dead, there was nothing to report. I saw it alive 20 minutes after the shot, and thought my shot was marginal, maybe a low leg hit. I left him overnight thinking I would come back and either find a dead deer, or nothing due to a flesh wound. There is no requirement for reporting that.

Imagine if we had to call everytime we hit a deer and didn't find it right away, or at all. [confusedagain]

Great lookin deer.. Congrats.

Gunny, I don't see that anywhere in the digest, and I was told by the Southern Region office a few years ago that you only need to call if you recover it the night before and cannot make it to a check station before 8pm in the fall bow season or 7pm in permit bow.

Nothing wrong with going into the woods to look for a deer the day after you shoot it, but you cannot carry a weapon with you on Sunday. Maybe if you want to carry a weapon while you search you need to call, but not just to search for a deer.
That's correct. Nowhere is it stated that you have to give up your search for a deer after huntings hours, you just cannot be carrying a weapon. Also, you do not have to call unless you recover your deer and are unable to check station before noted times.
