Brian, when my oldest son got his first and only buck, I told him that it was up to him if he wanted to get it mounted or not. He decided to have it plaque mounted and was thrilled to clean up the skull plate and mount it on the plaque himself. He hasn't regretted it. He says that it gives him the incentive to shoot a bigger buck. I also told my youngest son that if he gets another buck, he's shot nine nice ones so far, that I will leave it up to him. He told me that if he shoots a bigger buck than mine then, he will get it mounted. So, make sure that you involve your daughter in the decision making process. Don't just decide for her. Just my opinion.

My first buck I didn't get til I was in my last teens or early 20s and we got a full body mount that the taxidermist or the guy who caped it out screwed up and it looked like it had been zippered up the back. Was god awful and it fell apart. I don't have it any more but I remember every last second of the hunt and the excitement my dad had and the tears he shed standing there amongst total strangers hugging and high fiving. I am gonna get her a mount but the intangibles of the moment is so much more priceless.

my first 20 bucks (or so) didn't get mounted but my last 14 did... It's all a personal choice... There is no right or wrong. Once you adopt the standard "Not shooting it unless I am mounting it" it does impact your standards.. When it comes to kids - mounting a memory, nothing wrong with that. Many good taxidermists in our state, keep them employed I say!

I went euro with my first and I'm very proud of it. I have two daughters and if they get into hunting I'll mount their first buck, probably a euro because I like the look. I figure if they grow out of it later I'll keep their first on my wall for my memories or if they come back to the sport.

Dont over think it. Mount her first buck whether its a spike or a 10. Its about the memory, the experience, not the size of the antlers. Id even get a doe mounted for my daughter if its her first one, when the time comes that she can hunt, if she wants(I hope!!)You can always do euro mounts from there if money is tight.

When I first started taking my oldest boy, I told him 6 points or better, and we'll mount it. His first deer was a forkhorn with an antler on only one side. I lowered the bar on his second deer, he shot a 5 pointer in velvet, sadly the taxidermist made it's neck a little long and a little too thin.[eyeroll]

This was my first antlered buck and with a bow. I definitely think you should get it euro or shoulder mounted if you can. JerseyJay did mine and I love it. Every time I look at it over my fire place I remember the long hours on stand and the experience. You can't beat it.
