Places like maine you actually have to hunt instead of being in your backyard aka new jersey with cameras trying to time a buck.nothing wrong with getting in foot with rifle and knife and just going and actually hunting.new jersey spoiled alot of guys into instant gratification

Yes, more people = more posting. I shot my biggest buck, 230#, in 2008 after the bad winter. Found that one smoking fresh track at 0630 during a light drizzle, with about 2 inches of snow on the ground that had fallen after midnight. After about 1 hour of tracking up the ridge I got him.
Nice one Longbow. Yeah. The whole opportunity to track a deer in the big woods is nowadays a unique and rewarding experience.

A lot of guys here in Maine would like to get spoiled a little. I know so many hunters (locals) who hunt all of firearms season (4 weeks) and don't even see a deer. Some hunt for 20yrs and kill maybe one deer, even where I am in Central Maine. Once, I set a local guy up who had been hunting for 16yrs in this area and hadn't killed a deer. He shot a button buck, and was absolutely thrilled. Of course, having or not having a set of skills, does make a difference.

NIce deer! When was the last time someone from your camp got one over 200 in the Adirondacks? How common are they there?
Not sure how common they really are in our area but the club has taken a decent amount. Many are not hard hunters at the least lol. If they were I'm sure the success rate would be a little higher. This is the last 200+ lber. Shot the season before last.

Trail cam pics of a nice 10 from last year up there. Probably close to 200 dressed here. I'm sure he's tipping the scales this year. View attachment 39074
The deep chest and pot belly are the clues I use to tell a deer's size and age. You're right. He's a nice deer and he's "getting there!" I think you're right on the money with your prediction.
