I don't blame them for not staying open after hours so you could check in your turkey. I was in a business and people would call just before closing and say they were running late and only five minutes away would I stay open until they got there? Many times that five minutes turned into a half hour or more.

As far as customer service goes there, I had a brand new pair of Rocky boots that blew out within the first few days of a New Mexico elk hunt. I called the store and talked to the owner and he sent me a new pair for free from a different manufacturer. He even next day airmailed them. Now that is what I call good customer service. [up]

Ha phone in turkey check in like the deer there goes the population
?? The same people that don't check them now are the same that won't call them in. How is a call in system going to change an honest person's decision? I am happy about it. No more killing a bird a few minutes after 6 and having to wait til 8 to check it. Now I can kill, check and clean it and still make it into work on time.

I once bought a box of cigars there before going hunting. I always fire up a stogiie while deer hunting from a tree stand to monitor wind direction and changes in thermals. Just as I settled in for my afternoon hunt I realized that the Dunderhead behind the counter forgot to put the matches in my bag. I of course call to demand that they send an employee immediately to my tree with a pack of matches. I gave them my exact location in the woods, and I was only an hour and a half away. I couldn't believe they refused to send someone out! Horrible customer service. I haven't shopped there in the last 28 years!

[rofl]Most people who complain about customer service never worked with the public in the retail capacity.
Seems that it is becoming more common that retailers act as though the consumer owes them something or should be honored to be purchasing their product. I work in the professional service industry and own a rental business on the side. I know that going the extra mile pays off as word of mouth is our best advertisement. A pissed off customer can do some damage quickly nowadays with social media, yelp. etc.

I ran out of dog food, went to the local feed store and they were out of the brand I buy. Instead of just saying sorry bud, shipment won't be in for three days, the owner asked me if I had enough food to get by. I told her I was out, so she went to the back and brought out a dozen sample bags of the food. Told me that this should get me through until the shipment came in and didn't charge me. That is customer service, That is customer retention, That is the only store I will go to for pet products.

I see both sides to this. One is the close at 9 and that's that , they worked all day and you have set times for a reason , and once you give people an inch they take a mile . On the flip side , in this day and age with big box stores gobbling up mom and pops like a combine through a corn field it's the little things like this that can secure a shops future. If you would have checked the bird in at 910 and he waited you most likely wouldn't have come on here and said that they stayed open for you but since they didn't here we are at 3 pages. Just like a restaurant , have a good meal, tell 2 people, have a bad meal tell the world . Moral is dicks , cabelas, gander mountain etc will eventually be all that's left if mom and pops don't go the extra mile for local customers .

And ny has been doing phone check in for turkey for years. If people want to break the law they will. Check in has nothing to do with it.

A happy customer tells 1 person but a pissed off customer tell 10
Or a couple thousand if your on Njh

I actually work in the customer service industry. They lost a great customer last night. Ive probably spent over 10,000 in there in the past couple years in fishing and hunting gear.
You should have told them it was you asking them to stay open for an extra 5 minutes. They might have thought you were me, and they were still sore about the cigars.[smoke]

This is what gets me, he asked them to stay open later just for him and they said "No". So now his panties are in a wad because he didn't get his way and he feels the need to bash a long standing local family business online because he didn't get his way. This is one of the BIG problems with the "ME" people of today..... it is not about you! Take some personal responsibility and stop blaming others.
The next time before you shoot a turkey late in the day stop and think if you have enough time to check it in or not. Blaming others for your decisions is like Barrack Obama saying "Black people have no chance to succeed in this country!" Yes it does sound stupid doesn't it?

Rant over.

I agree. The OP kind of shocks me. Rules are rules.

I would never in a million years expect a private place of business to "stay open" later than their posted hours just for me.

Then publicly slandering them on the internet for it takes the cake to a whole new level.

What if the store employee had to pick up a child somewhere after work? Would you leave your child stranded because of someone else's poor planning? Me and my wife run around like maniacs picking up and dropping kids off at dance, karate, baseball, etc.
You have no way of knowing their situation, I think you bad mouthed them prematurely. Oh yeah, congrats on the bird!

All kidding and sarcasm aside. I feel your frustration. I remember driving around like an idiot trying to get deer to a check station on time, especially during the early season. Don't beat up the store, the check in system is the culprit here. I'm in favor of having a telecheck program just like for deer. Congratulations on your bird, and cool down and enjoy your success!

So a guy who only could get a D permit shouldn't hunt birds after work because he might just get one right before they roost, and possibly not make it to the store in time for closing?

On May 19th the sun sets at 8:12 pm. A store takes on the burden to be a check station they should know that people will be coming in at least for an hour after it is dark. If they don't like it, don't be a check station. Plain and simple!!! Ten minutes just lost them a customer, TEN MINUTES!!!! In todays world you need every customer.

Doesn't seem to be a "ME" issue. Its a "them" issue, not wanting to take care of an obviously good customer.
