Hi everyone! I'm a new member, but I have experience shooting. I was looking to get into hunting and, while looking up the necessary qualifications, can't seem to resolve some of my questions by looking on the NJDEP website. Could some of you help me out? :D

I am a New Jersey resident, and I'm interested in acquiring a Resident Firearm Hunting License and a Rifle Permit along with it.

1. The Rifle Permit is good for a period from July 1 - June 30. If I were to get a permit this May, would this permit be valid starting July 1 of this year and ending June 30 of next year? Or would this license only be valid until June 30 of this current year? Should I just wait until after July 1 to get a permit? Also, do I just purchase the Rifle Permit after completing my respective course?

2. If I am to acquire a hunting license after completing my respective courses, the license would only be valid until December 31 of 2015. Would I be able to simply pay to renew the license in 2016, or would I have to take the course again before being able to hunt in 2016? This is a concern because there is usually a good stretch of time in early January where we can hunt varmints (squirrels, raccoons, and possums).

3. I can't find any rules in the list of WMA's specifying whether or not squirrels, raccoons, and possums can be hunted or not in each respective area. They don't seem to be given zones like deer as permits aren't required for them. Given that I am properly hunting during the respective season for certain game and that I have a Resident Firearm Hunting License and a Rifle Permit, would I be authorized to hunt in all NJ WMA areas?

Also, what're your experiences with getting a hunting license and rifle permit in NJ? I have a Ruger 10/22 and a Maverick 88, and plan to load the 10/22 with .22 shorts when hunting raccoons/possums and I'll use a .22 air rifle when hunting squirrels.

1. wait, unless you want to hunt before july 1. You buy it after completing the course. 2. yes you have to get a new license Jan 1 every year. You only have to take the safety course 1 time. 3. you can hunt all the WMA with a hunting license. Pretty easy to get a license. Complete the workbook, sign up for a course and spend a few hours taking the test and field courses. Welcome to the site.[up]

That kind of **** hound do you have.
Mite the only way to legally hunt with shorts.
I can't seem to find anything about requiring a dog to hunt those varmints, nor do I think they would require that. The only requirements are that you stay within season, use a rifle between the calibers of .177 and .22 (for rimfire), and follow daily limits.

1) if you buy your rifle permit prior to july 1 it will expire july 1. 2) As for your license it expires December 31 and all you need to do is purchase a new one for the next year, they are usually available a week before January1ST. 3) As for small game on WMA,s there is no zones just State wide regulations. 4) As for hunting with a .22 for 'possum and '**** they are hunted at night with a rifle, airguns are covered by the firearm license but not the .22. 5) As far as experience you can aquire that on your own or find someone who is into what you are interested and ask them to help you.

Thanks a bunch. :) I'll just complete the workbook and take the course after July 1 then. And I'll just buy a new license next year at a location that sells the licenses or online.

So I can go hunting for squirrels during their open season with an airgun regardless of having a rifle permit, but I will need a rifle permit to hunt raccoons and possums with my .22 . Okay! I'd love to just jump straight into it myself since I'm already a pretty good shot and can follow safety rules. I do have one other question though. On the page pertaining to small game hunting, they mention "8 AM Start on Nov 8) even when the open season for, say, squirrels starts in late September. What does this mean? :'D

Hahahh, yeah, I understand what he's saying now though.

To answer his question: I don't own any hunting hounds, and I don't plan on using them. Just doesn't seem like my bit. As for using .22 shorts, I'll buy one of the modified magazines for the 10/22 that takes .22 shorts and just load it with 3 of those at a time when hunting possums/raccoons. :D Guess I should buy an air rifle once I start hunting!
