And I am so friggin excited about it. I play the hunting lottery game in several states and it is not easy to draw a good tag, but every now and then you get lucky. [up] I have applied for big horn sheep in Arizona for more than 20 years without drawing a tag and I probably never will draw one, but if you don't try you will never have a chance at all.
The lead up to the hunt and getting ready for it has begun. Damn did I tell you that I was excited?[ko]

Didnt you draw nm elk last year?
2 years ago I drew. I have hunted and even guided in New Mexico for many years in one of the most popular Gila units. The last time I hunted that unit it was sad compared to what it was in years past. Not many elk seen and a lot of tags handed out. Two years ago I made a move which was a tough decision for me. When you have so much time invested into a area it is hard to leave it and start all over again from scratch, but that is what I did and I had a ball in my new unit. This year the learning curve for that new area is behind me. Two years ago I covered so much country learning it I lost 20 pounds. Finding the prime lookouts, wallows, tanks, and saddles that the elk were using. It is in my head now so it is time reap the rewards. Some of my best elk hunts I ate tag soup, and they are the ones that bring the biggest smiles to my face when I think of them.
