Collect unemployment and see if a marina will take you on as an unpaid apprentice to learn the bigger motors. Perhaps they will all say, "hell no" due to liability but you never know. You might find that guy who admires your work ethic and spirit and is willing to give you a chance.

I know you are from up North but Bass Pro is opening in AC soon. They sell Mako, Tracker, Suntracker, Nitro ect. They will probably have a service center for these boats. Maybe they are looking since the place is opening in April? Just a thought even know it is far.

Best of luck with your search!

I'm already talking with Prospect Point marina, the say they will be hiring a guy this spring and so far I'm at the top of the list, I'll know more in a few weeks, Im not in trouble yet, this let go was due to them going a different direction, so I was basicly down sized.

Do yourself a favor and do it on the side but find a new profession. The marine trades industry absolutely sucks. Employees bounce around like pinballs from shop to shop. Prospect Point will be a temporary fix till the fall then you will be in the same situation you are in now. Was in the marine industry for a long time best move I ever made was getting out. Marine Max bull@#$% was my final straw also. They all suck Paul. If you truly want to make a career out of it you have to do it on your own.

Still say you could do better working for yourself doing Mobile marine work.
Unless its just the smaller engines that are your specialty.
There are many guys that want their work done without all the time taking it to a marina .
Yes - one guy, The Boat Doctor, manages more than a tone of the boats on Lake Mohawk, he spring tune ups, fall fog outs and winterizes, takes care of simple problem when boats are on water (bilges, starters, batteries) and some bigger stuff. 99% of the boeaters have no clue how to charge their own battery. he shows up when he wants and charges big bucks,

Danforth's charges on arm and a leg too but is usaully backed up big itme. The Boat Doctor has a little bit of an attitude too - if you start with a small couple boats while collecting unemployment, word gets around fast. I am sure plenty would make the shift and you could open your own business for half a year doinf small repairs on boats and clean up, then be a Walmart greeter the other half.[eek]

Just got a call from my boss at marine max on Hopatcong, guess what, they let me go, my services are no longer neede as they are going away from outboard boat packages, and backed off the deal with yamaha citing low to no sales on these boat packages, so now once again I'm looking for a job, this craps getting old!! I am talking with Prospect Point marina and it looks good so that's a plus, I'll know something more in a couple weeks. I just want to work!!!! I'm a bosses wet dream! I guy that wants to work and I can't find a friggin place to do it!!![wallmad]
Who fired you Charlie?

You should go talk to Ray at Bridge, or Dave at Lakes End. I may know a few people around the lake I can talk to for you.

Time to change careers go into the fire and security sales ie: CCTV, Card Access business always a need and you don't have to have a PhD to sell. And you can do marine service on the side. Did it for 20 yrs made pretty good buck at it.

Paul have you tried North Jersey Marine? They specialize in Bass Boats so all the engines are in your size range. Its on Howard Blvd not far from Pub 199.
He's gone STEVO, moved it to prospect point and retired as a under stand it.

to the others who say do it on the side, I do, I even have a core group of clients from the site here, just need to be able to work more than just a day here and there.

zone9, Charlie was there but Mike the service chief was the one that broke it to me.

Nah, I started mid October and ended the first week of December. Hey! If anyone needs work done on thier outboard or boat for the up coming spring I'm your guy!!!

Maybe a wake up call for a slight career change. The boating industry has been suffering for a long time now.Back in the day I left the job at the marina and went to school at engine city tech ,heavy truck and diesel repair .Looking back on it now ,I would say it was a great move Today there is more demand for this, and besides that ,Marina owners and boaters are the cheapest going.Good luck.[up]

Paul,

I forgot to ask you when we bird hunted with you in January at Hunt family... If your Yamaha certified, I'll have you do my 20 hr service on my Gamefish 25' (twin Yam 150's) Its being delivered 1st week of April , I'll blow through that first 20 hrs two weeks after I drop it in the water... I also need an oil change/basic service on a 2010 two stroke yamaha 150 and Yam 9.9 4stroke kicker on a Smokercraft 19' pro mag. I'll be pulling it from the garage towards the end of March... PM me to discuss if your interested. Greg L.
