Great, now that's a useful reply! Your experience on follow ups is interesting, not what I would expect. As someone else asked, when you do follow up, is someone carrying a firearm?
No backup weapons. ...Just a second arrow In all honesty I think over playing the danger here. Any wild animal thats been shot is dangerous not just bears.

I'm all for hunting bear with a bow but just like Sunday gun hunting (don't let this go on tangent), I don't know that you can simply institue it without considering the few issues that may arise. If you can gun hunt while archery hunting then I feel better about it because I can go back to the truck and at least get my muzzy to track. SOmeone pointed out that they had to follow up 6 times out of 100 tracking jobs. Unless those bears are out in the open for the follow up shot, I simply want to be able to follow up with a gun on a bear. I'm done unless someone posts something different. [wallmad]

It's just not as efficient a weapon. In a populated area, with dangerous game that could kill you, it's not a simple matter of back out until the morning.
My ass not efficient. When I picked my bear skin up at the taxidermist he had a bucket full of 12 and 20 gauge slugs, buckshot and birdshot that he had pulled out of bears from seasons past. (Meaning old wounds not fresh) Like anything the weapon is only as efficient as the person shooting it!

There's a reason the military uses guns and not bows (except Rambo). The gun is just more efficient. I agree that in the right hands, a bow can be as effective a tool for hunting but more can go wrong at the time of the shot, whether its things beyond the shooter's control, like deflection, or something like bear "fever". It's not the "Fred Bear's" out there that concern me.
SAY WHAT???? the military uses guns because you can't shoot people a mile away with a bow. And we wonder why the antis are kicking our asses.

Settle down now. We had a reasonable discussion and someone with a lot of experience showed that my concern is probably not justified. I'm satisfied with that. As far as gun vs. bow. I always aim for shoulder bone with a slug. You don't shoot for bone with a bow for a reason. Let's not bs ourselves. What antis are kicking our asses anyway?

Dude wtf? Have you ever bow hunted bears? Very obviously not. You're prob well intentioned but way wrong. The only thing that dies easier when hit with an arrow than a bear is a rabbit. Commonly going less than 40 yards often 15-20. Believe it or not that is absolute fact. Archery tackle is an extremely effecient manner and humane way of hunting.

You have zero idea what you're talking about. Do a poll averaging how far bears ran when hit through the lungs w bow and w a gun of any gauge or caliber n you'll see how wrong you are. Guys are entitled to opinions I'll givr that but you should learn facts

I could also add that out of the 20 something archery bears I was a part of 1 was spined and needed a finishing shot, one was wounded and tracked for over 200 yards before giving up and the rest were dead in 5-40 yards. I've also seen 2 good friends wound 5 different bears over the years with a 35rem and a 30 06 which were not recovered. There is no reason the a bow shouldn't be used here in Nj. How many deer are wounded with shotguns in this state each year?
