If they didn't take them and you went and did hurt someone they would be held liable. No matter what kind of note you get your doctor still stamped mentally ill for life. Sorry bud but I side with them on this one.

You have to get your firearms and FID back from the county that took them. Call the county prosecutor's office and ask them for the procedure for getting your FID "renewed", and your guns back. Good luck.

for life? even with that dr note clearing me of what happened? that was the biggest mistake of my life and im paying for it everyday. i called the prosecuter he is never there and never returns my calls :( once again stuck with no where and dont know what to do.
Go down in person. It would be a lot easier if you got an attorney.

Tough break bud. I'm glad you were able to get the help you need. I would try the route suggested by longbow and show the prosecutor the note from your doctor. Be polite and offer to put them in touch with the doctor if they want to speak to them. You may have to reapply entirely but being honest and forthcoming is the way to go. I think your note will bolster your case. Though not nearly as extreme I had similar worries about obtaining my FID and my doctor was able to help my case. Here's my story http://www.newjerseyhunter.com/foru...irearms-id-card-gun-permits/168301-fid-mental-health-first-hand-experience.html.

Good luck!

First of all, very sorry for your loss. As for the FID, with a suicide attempt, it certainly won't be easy (if even possible at all) to get your FID back. They will look at the suicide attempt as a huge risk factor, and probably won't re-issue, they won't want that kind of liability.. but I guess you never know till you try.

Im thinking you have one hell of a battle on your hands trying to get them back in a state like jersey. After hearing your story I don't even think you would get them back if you lived over here in Pa. I believe it would go before a judge and if your still being treated for ANY KIND of documented mental illness those guns don't ever have to be released back to you. No one will want blood on there hands

You have a few things stacked against you on this one. The issuing department has the authority to deny your FID application if they "think" you could be a danger, having any type of history (criminal or mental health) would allow them to deny your application so the chief of police could be the determining factor in your case. If you do apply and the PD issues an FID after taking your doctor's opinion into consideration you may still have issues with form 4473 questions and NICS checks depending on what is actually on your record. Without spending big bucks and getting everything expunged I don't think you stand much chance of ever getting another FID in this state.
