I follow multiple traditional bow hunting forums on Facebook. One of the guys posted this video. I believe the location is Canada, but the video shows a group of does running across a field with a coyote in hot pursuit. The yote catches the last doe, and but for the videographer, that doe would have been dinner. i tell ya what 20 yrs ago whether bow or gun everytime i would go out i could at least get a shot at a doe. now i don't even see doe's in spots i have been hunting for 25 yrs. you are saying its the long seasons bow or muzzy. i don;t see it there are less hunters in these spots than ever and i hardly ever hear any shots and yet with this little snow on the ground i see yote tracks all over the place. like i said at least 15 yrs ago before the bear and the yote there was a hell of lot more deer . zone 3
Ahhhh - the lowly coyote - the easy scape goat for NJ hunters to blame for decreases in deer populations. Using this theory - I cant wait till we start to see a significant decrease in the feral cat population of NJ (of course this is once the coyotes eat all the deer and they switch over to another easyly available food source). Shall we continue to fail to look in the mirror or keep burring our heads in the sand like a bunch of ostriches - nope - easier to reassign the blame.

The number of coyotes out in the pines is at a all time high and the number of deer are less and less.they put a hurting on fawns I've driven out there with fresh snow for miles and came across 5 sets of deer tracks and dozens of yotes.ive heard packs of them out there.big yotes too all color phases so to say they don't put a dent in deer numbers is Ludacris. They kill alot of fawns

The guys that say yotes aren't a problem probably don't get out much or hunt where they are rampant. JMO.

I' m all for taking them to balance the population that is out of whack , but how about we limit our deer season for couple years to replenish the herd . We should open coyote season all year and for every 2 yotes checked you earn a Doe tag that is valid state wide and not zone specific OR earn one in the zone the coyotes were taken . :grouphug:

I actually have a degree in Biology so I've taken quite a few courses in my past. I have a pretty good understanding of how they affect the ecosystem, both positively and negatively. However, my comment was a facetious one and I can understand it being taken the wrong way. What was meant by this is that the coyote population in my area is out of control and having a significantly negative and noticeable impact on the other game species.

Has anybody hunted New York lately. 10 years ago deer it was nothing to see 15 deer in a day. Now you go to certain areas and hear nothing but coyotes howling as you walk out to the stand. Then you are lucky to see 3 deer the entire weekend. I gave up going there because the deer population is way down. Are the crazy doe days and long seasons killing the deer population there too?

Again totally agree I've hunted NY my entire life and population does take a big hit , but what is the solution ????? I don't see more coyote hunters , that dedicate time only to pursue them . We all sit in our deer stands and wait to see if one ambles by . Can't complain if we are not doing our part to manage them . They are a difficult adversary that needs to be dealt with.
But again being able to shoot unlimited Does is ludicrous .... If it wasn't for to buddies of mine allowing me to hunt on there private land my son and I would have shot nothing this season . I hunt TSP in Monmouth and herd there is gone . Deer drives Glutinous deer management and Predators can ALL take the blame equally .

Agreed , I believe that's PA rule. There sould be concessions made to our bag limits as well , in PA it's one doe permit for all seasons unless otherwise noted and its by lottery . Now I know Jersey is a deferent cases but changes need to be implemented .
I know this won't be popular either but here goes it ; Crossguns have also made a dramatic impact on the deer population , we've now given the most unskilled shooter an opportunity to harvest game In "Archery" season . You can't say that this hasn't been a direct result of the state trying to thin the herd . You need almost no skill to shoot one of them and its opened up opportunity to hunt closer to residential areas .
Many things have changed in last couple years ( crossbows/ unlimited does) but to blame one critter without looking at ourselves is no good .
