I got shot by some yahoo in Black River about 10 years ago. He was shooting at a cockbird running along a stonerow. Granted it was only a ricochet, but it was like getting shot with a BB gun. I had the guy by the shirt up against a tree with my fist in his face. The guy was pretty old and apologizing left and right so I didn't kick his a$$. I told him I wasn't kicking his a$$ because he was too old. That was probably worse than actually giving him a beat-down.

I don't think shooting on the ground should be illegal. It is like shooting at a rabbit. If you know your target and beyond there is nothing wrong with it.
IMO it's pretty bogus to think shooting at a pen-raised phez on the ground is in any way "birdhunting". If the dog and I can't find some birds, and get them to fly, then hit them in the air, we don't deserve to bring any home. Otherwise, I could always go buy a couple of chickens then shoot them as they run around the backyard.

But as far as the dude getting shot, there are way too many hunters who only see the bird, and have no idea (and don't seem to care less) about what's beyond or even around it. That's why we never hit the WMA's before 11:30 AM on a stocking day.

This sounds like similar story that ALMOST happened to my cousin and I up at the Flatbrook last year, exactly this past weekend last year! The guys dog's name was Molly. That's all we kept hearing as we were fishing in the river. Get'em Molly come on Molly. Well Molly flushed a bird right in front of us in some brush and the shot came with it right over our heads within 10 yards. Scared the $hit out of me. The guy probably never thought anyone would be fishing in the river but like Jersey Jim said BE SURE OF WHAT YOU ARE SHOOTING AT AND BEYOND!! I fhe had shot and other few feet lower, he probably would have killed us. I'll never forget the shower of pellets falling over our heads..

Then you run at them and make them fly
I'm going going to run through the woods with a loaded firearm. To me that is more dangerous than shooting a bird on the ground if I know what is behind it.

WOW you figured that out all by yourself....

for your information i hunt lots of places that isnt the only one

I've been shot many times while hunting WMA's. Black River is the equivalent of a war zone on opening day and Thanksgiving. Nothing close enough to be very serious (my Filson [no swearing please] is pretty tough... but not bulletproof), but it is very disconcerning to know that people are out there shooting at anything that moves. I wear safety glasses now just to be on the safe side; I'd hate to lose my vision becuase some cocksucker shot at a bird between us. I'm also thinking of getting each of my dogs a blaze orange vest, but their bells should alert others to their presence.

We tentativly talked about pheasant hunting together, but it fell through. Now I am glad it did.
I can tell you that I am one of the safest hunters out there. I have passed on many shots. I am yet to shoot a dog or another person.
