Edison hunter shot in mishap
An Edison man was accidentally shot by another hunter in a state wildlife area in Millstone early this morning.

New Jersey State Police reported William Savovick Jr., 53, was walking into the woods at the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area when a hunter took a shot at a pheasant that had kicked up in front of him.

Sabovick was hit in the side of the face and the eye with buckshot, said Sgt. Jeanne Hengemuhle. Sabovick's son called 911 and Sabovick was rushed to Centra State Medical Center in Freehold with non-life threatening injuries, she said.

No charges were filed against the hunter.

Buckshot?? Most likely bird shot.. Goos to hear he is ok
Yeah, he would have had his head blown off if it were buckshot. I hate to see this sort of thing. Makes us all look like yahoos. I can see the headlines now!
"Cheney's cousin goes hunting in NJ"
Not good for all of us. I hope this guy is OK!!

I heard it was with a crossbow......

All kidding aside.....I'm glad he is ok and WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!! A pheasant isn't worth hurting someone over!!!!! Make sure of your shot!!!! Safety first... If your not 100% sure of your target and beyond P [no swearing please] ON THE SHOT!!! There is plenty more birds where that one came from!!!

Yes, I have had this happen with bird shot, luckily I was not close enough to get hurt. Also had it happen with buck shot and had to lay on the ground with shot pounding the ground all around me until the gun was empty. Not fun!! 5 shots, yahoo took the plug out. Did I mention he was a cop. Yes it was quite a confrontation.

You have to be kidding me!!!!There is NO EXCUSE for shooting another hunter. He should be prosecuted.

My guess he was trying to shoot a bird on the ground. I practice I think should be illegal and enforced by undercover game wardens.

I can see how this could happen with quail because they fly low and are hard to hit. Still there is no excuse. Cheney should have been prosecuted also. I say this in spite of my "T"shirt that reads "I would rather go hunting with Dick Chaney than go for a ride with Ted Kennedy"

Someone shot into the parking lot at Whittingham on Saturday. My buddies truck got nicks on it and one gouy had the shot end up in his coffe cup while drinking it. I was leaning on my buddies truck when it happened and had the shot hit me in the back of the head it stung!

The shot into the parking lot was about 5ft off the ground and far from being pepper shot it has flying pretty good. And yes a beating was a thought in my head but I was not sure who did it. A- Holes in my book! [mad][down]

It sounds to me that he shot while the bird was rising.

I don't think shooting on the ground should be illegal. It is like shooting at a rabbit. If you know your target and beyond there is nothing wrong with it.

First of all there isn't the number of hunters around rabbit hunting as when pheasant hunting so it is a safety issue with pheasant hunting.

Also it is a sportsmanship issue. The sport of bird hunting is to shoot a FLYING bird not one on the ground. Unless the bird is a cripple( in which case the dog should catch it anyway)it is not really hunting to shoot a bird on the ground, Shooting a pheasant on the ground is tantamount to shooting a duck sitting on the water.
