Pileated. Porcupines eat the bark of live trees whereas woodpeckers eat larva and other insects out of mostly dead trees by pecking holes in it. That and the size of the chips indicate pileated. We have had a pair in our woodlot every year since we moved here 16 years ago and they constantly reduce my dead trees and branches nearly to sawdust quickly in our woodlot. Love watching them hammer away.

I would say porcupine. Pileated woodpeckers make squared off holes, never saw one go completely around the whole tree like that.

A forester girdling a black birch to kill it standing. Looks like a specialty router was used. We just use a chainsaw and make about a 1' deep cut twice around the tree to do the same thing.
Bingo. This is on state land...they girdled about 200 trees. Top of the mountain. Why are they killing them?

Isn't this the person who stole DeeerMaster's newspapers?It was probably the beast that's the only way she can get wood intake because I can't imagine anybody throwing the wood to this beast![Image]()
