The little snow we had the other night caused a loss of power here in Byram for approximately 2 plus hours. Caught me off guard. Am prepared now in that I have a good supply of gas. Was wondering what you think is the best stabilizer out there to use. Also, how long will untreated gas last as compared to treated gas?

When i had a gas gen I used stabil and also sea foam. Still do in my gas storage cans for my other stuff.

Also put in a shutoff and ran it dry to get the gas out of the carb

Swapped to a diesel generator after that last hurricane. Was two years back to back of no power for 10 days!

I start my gen up every month and let it warm up a bit and make sure its good to go.

Best to not store if possible but, a fuel stabilizer and ethanol treatment is best. Seafoam is great but stabil ethanol treatment goes further. Also, when going into long term store I spray a little seafoam deep creep in the case, to keep everything free

stabil in my genny... I fire it up once every 6months or so, run a pair of halogen work lamps on each phase for a while, then kill the load and run the bowl dry. I think once a month is too much... you get condensation every time you heat cycle it. the more often you screw with it the faster stuff rusts up

Stabil for sure. One thing you might want to consider... I have two gennys (two different locations) and converted them to tri fuel. Just google US Carb. For about $200-$300, you can convert any gas generator to take gas, propane, or NG. NG is the best if your home has it. NG doesn't stop during a power outage. If not, Propane stores way better than gasoline. You can run it dry and just keep a few bottles of propane to run. You can still run on gasoline as well. I did it myself, very easy. Remember, when you have a big power outage, often the local gas stations are out of power too....

running a genny on street cng may mean you need to up your inlet pipe size and regulator. you would have to size what you have running between your furnace, hot water, stove, etc. if you want to run propane you'll need something a lot larger than a 20# BBQ tank. one that size would freeze up very quickly. try something like a 250-500gal tank. storing propane for long periods of time is the easiest (compared to gas) as long as you're ok with a tank... getting a refill could be a problem in a sandy type situation.

I've run my genny on 20lb tanks for days. I have 6500 watt generator....maybe you're referring to a larger one. I've found a 20lb tank lasts just about as long as a tank of gas. Go check out the web site, they've sold thousands of these things. The coupler it comes with is for 20lb tanks. Not many people have or want 500 gal propane tanks. You are correct on the sizing on the NG, but they have very helpful charts (it depends on how long the run is...1/2 inch diameter min).

Just my $0.02. Use ethanol-free fuel if you're storing it for an extended period. Ethanol creates water in your carb and will rot out your machine. When I store my snow blower, I run it completely out of fuel. Then I add Small Engine Fuel (SEF) and run it through the lines. Youll be grateful you did. SEF is available at Home Depot and similar.

I've heard some iffy things about seafoam in the past. Just use stabil and you'll be okay. I'd use higher quality gasoline as well, these generators (and new lawn mowers and leaf blowers etc.) need a higher quality gas. Otherwise they won't last very long, I promise.
