This past Saturday I was able to connect with this 8 Pt in Readington and it was EXTRA EXTRA special as it was the first deer I harvested with my son sitting right next to me. Tino is 9 yrs old and has been tagging along with me since he was 2. the early years consisted of a blind, lots of snacks and lots of talking on his part I would usually take him out for 3 -4 sits in the early season and that was good enough for him in those days. the last three years we have shared a double tree stand at my uncles in Readington and have had many close encounters... he has rattled deer in.. grunted them in but we were just never able to connect (where is he dad.. how big is he... ) My Tino likes to TALK and TALK and TALK....whether at home, school or in a tree stand as he faces certain challenges and has been classified on the "spectrum". This is the one area me, my wife, teachers and other continue to work with him on and being in a tree stand is a great way to do that. So this past Friday night he said to me "dad I will not talk as we will shoot a MONSTER whitetail in the morning I promise"... this is something he usually says every time but this time he held true to his promise.... so when this buck sat behind us @ 40 yards eating grass for 40 minutes he did not say a word.... as the deer slowly walked behind us at 15 yards and i was preparing to draw he did not say a word... as I shot he did not say a word..........even after I shot a second arrow which was the kill shot he still did not say a word.... And finally I looked at him and he said "I told you I would not talk"!!!!! Due to the shot being a little far back we gave the deer a few hours but when we finally walked to the place we last saw him he was laying 5 yards into the woods. The look on his face and joy he felt when he picked up the deers rack was priceless. It was truly a great day and now he has plenty of stories to tell all his friends at school
