I'm not a professional, know it all etc, like any hunter I am learning every year since I was 10, now 29. I am always open to try different tactics and learning from others so I figured I would share some tactics that have consistently produced for me. A big mistake new and veteran hunters alike make (guilty) is finding rubs scrapes etc and setting up shop right on the sign. This undoubtedly works ....sometimes. My success rate significantly went up once I started focusing on does from this time of year on into peak rut. Ultimately it changed my whole mindset and how I "manage" the properties I have access too. Learning the importance of sanctuaries no matter what the size, staying out of them and having the discipline to do so can hold deer on even the smallest pieces of properties all year long. Utilizing these tactics coupled with mock scrapes and calling over the next few weeks will up your odds at killing a mature deer.

The bedding/sanctuary behind my house that is appx 4 acres of impenetrable thick nasty briars and trees I hinge cut is a 100% no fly zone except for tracking a deer or my shed trap. I keep the does fat and happy 365/24/7. About dozen or so local does 3 or 4 of which are in the 4 to 7 year old range and with there yearlings and then another 8 to 10 does that come and go. I have a cam on main trail leading in one on same trail on opposite side of the thicket and one on the down wind side of the sanctuary that historically has been the cam that catches the most bucks as they scent check the bedding area while traveling through. That cam almost always coincides with the start of the seeking phase for my area. Once I start getting pics of multiple different bucks it's time for me to start focusing on hunting my swamp. Checked yesterday, 3 bucks,2 of which where young baskets BUT the third who cruised by at 623am on the 20th was in the 90 inch range and I have never seen him before. I friggin LOVE this time of year. Using this tactic and strategy has paid off for me on several occasions. It takes discipline leaving it alone and only hunting it about a month out of the year but certainly worth it. Here's a buck I took using this tactic two years ago. View attachment 25624 View attachment 25625 View attachment 25626 this massive rub made by this guy was 15 yards from the down wind trail that bucks use to scent check the bedded area. Feel free to add any info or tactics that you like to use. After all this is a hunting forum for fellow sportsman to share stories and educate eachother which I think some members often forget.

Hmmm. No one else here has proven tactics that they use and wants to share? If a bunch of guys share some stuff here this could be really handy thread.

Im basically doing the same thing. I have two spots with heavy doe activity and im trying my best to stay out of there until my camera tells me its time to go. Im going to hunt one of those spots tomorrow nite because i think a shooter has latched onto the group of does. If i blow it in this spot they will most likely show in my other spot. Tomorrow will be a very long day at work, i got that nervous knot in my stomach knowing that its just about go time. I love this time of year.

I hear you mako. Restless anxious tossing and turning at night. Wait all year for the next few weeks. Elevated heart rate just thinking of hearing crunching in the leaves or the famous "group of does comes through and they stop and look behind them! " ahhhhh haha

Also would this be a stupid idea,

I want to lay an estrus trail to about 15yards from my stand and at the base of my stand use buck bomb buck urine at the base of my tree. I will also use a doe in estrus can and grunt tube.

Is that stupid? I just figured that if by a miracle a buck does come by and circles to scent check he will smell both scents and come in.

Russ- is it a bedding area you found? If so if you can get in at midday without blowing the place out I would get in there and hang a stand without being to intrusive scent free as possible of course hang the stand and leave it alone for a week or so. As far as scent drag I would start 100 plus yards from stand. Load up scent start dragging and last 60 yards re apply. Don't want the buck following scent back to your truck. Don't walk directly to your stand. Walk out of your comfort zone towards where deer will be coming from (edge of bedding area, thicket etc) then J hook back around your stand so if a buck gets on it he will follow it around your stand giving you a better shot opportunity rather then walking in directly towards your stand. Learned this lesson the hard way.

It is right outside of a bedding area (50 yards away), I don't think I will blow them out. But they use this area to get to the bean field they are in every night. Should I spreay doe pee on my boots to help cover my scent?

I just don't want to screw this up lol.

I am deerless thus far and it's frustrating because I had deer near my stand quite a few times but then none all of the sudden.

If you already have does " natural bait" dont mess around with scents because they may booger up your does. Hang a stand mid day, far enough and quiet enough that the does dont know you are in there. And for gods sake dont shoot one of the does if you plan on killing a buck there.

As mako said hunt the does. Don't get nuts with the scent until the day you hunt and the decision you have to make is are there enough does to use as bait? Any evidence of a mature buck in area? If there is its only a matter of time before he will cruise by looking for your does. Another good tactic is use boot pads with regular doe pee on it or another type of cover scent because just walking to your stand disturbs the leaves , breaks twigs, bends weeds over. Deer will know "something" came through its your job to make sure they don't know what and not put them on alert. As far as being to close with stand I always ask myself this question to see if I'm getting greedy and to close. "if someone walked into my living room and flipped my coffee table over would I notice?" Yes! But if someone moved something in my garage I may not realize it.....until it's to late.

And jerz guy- I am running out of wall space but the best part about hunting is your only in competition with yourself. Always striving to top your self and set new goals. That's why when you take time off work to sit in a stand for 9 hours in 8 degrees with the wind howling and you think "this is awesome" you know your a hunter. My non hunting buddies always bust my balls saying dave takes vaca to go "tree sitting" in the cold. If you have to ask you'll never understand. Haha

Seems we are on the same page, i have had alot of success using REGULAR doe pee on a drag or boot pad. I can honestly say I' ve never had any success with doe in heat scent. I think everydeer in NJ associates Tinks 69 with humans because so many people use it. As far as the J-hook approach, I do a have a spot along a field where that tactic is the only way to get in without blowing out the motherlode. They watch me cross the far side of the field and then disappear, thats when i hook around and use a small finger of trees that juts out into the field as cover for my approach. They will watch you walk by without getting up as long you dont look at them.

I will say PURE HEAT by REAL SCENT is very expensive but the absolute BEST. Estrus on the market. 3 years ago in CT for rifle opener there was 8 of us in camp. Everyone was tagged out by 9 am opening morning on bucks that dressed over 200 lbs. All fell to a purr hear drag. Nor a one off either. This has happened 4 different years. Tinks is goat piss. Like real goat piss. Never had any luck and as u said everyone and there brother uses it.
