Powerstroke, I had a cousin who was using a loggy bayou cheap seat and had one of the cables fail. He was smart enough to be tied off and his fall was abruptly stopped after about three feet. Unfortunately, his rope didn't stop him from having his right thigh impaled by one of his screw in steps to a depth of about 3/4". He bled like a stuck pig and spent a few hours at the local ER. Lesson learned...... I honestly don't want to read about anyone going through that or anything similar if I can pass on what I have learned. As always, just food for thought.........

How Long WI'll the cables last? Wouldn't putting on a extra rachet strap or 2 stabilize the stand in case one cable snaps?
Straps keep the stand to the tree. The cables support the platform. Just check them out, if the cables are rusted and frayed then don't use or replace. Also checkthe bolts are tight yearly.

Did the cable fail or did the bolt holding that cable fail?

Wish I knew this a few days ago. I got 2 guide gear stands from sportsman's and like the price so much I ordered another one. I may just call and see if I can cancel.
Why? JDH just gave them a glowing review.

Cheaper grade metals, smaller gauge, less rugged construction...and most importantly, probably made in China!! and we all know how good the quality is of products coming out of there [hihi]
I bought a Big Game Stand and they aren't cheap and they are made in China too. China makes both high and and low end products so simply going by the country isn't a good indicator any more.

I used to build my own loc-ons out of wood 30years ago and camo them with homemade stencils and spray paint. Besides taking my life Into y own hands the first year I used them deer would pick me off downwind about a half mile away, crosswind and I swear upwind. Guess they did not like the smell of volatile chemicals.

season the stand outside for at least a month or two after spray painting metal.

as far as the quality the middle of the road has been good, Gorilla $100 ect... I noticed them to be easier to hang and more comfortable and solid. You don't need top of the line but if you can afford another $40 it is worth it.
