1. I ended up investing in an SKB hard case. I was planning to pack my bow but also some hunting clothes in the case, but the inside protective stuff stinks. Is there anything I can do in the next few days to ease that?

2. I haven't checked a bag in years, do I bring it to the counter for the airline or is there a special TSA place I need to go?

Oh, and a third... can I leave the broadheads on the arrows or do they need to be taken off?

Other than that, I'm all set to go show the boys in Louisiana how we get things done in NJ. If I don't die from the heat, that is.

1) spray the inside of your case with scent neutralizer and keep the case open and let dry. repeat a few times and the scent should be suppressed. remember some sprays neutralize human scent only. 2) check your bow in as any other luggage. its not a firearm and does not need to be checked separately. 3) do not have broadheads assembled inside the bow case, that's just asking for trouble (even though the skb cases are the best!) good luck

Broad heads assembled are fine. Just flew to Colorado and back. No problems even with a .357 and ammo in my bow case. Gun was in a separate locked case within my bow case. Arrows had broad heads ready to go and bow case had locks as well.

IMO it's a good idea to put a little sticky note on the case saying, "careful TSA-very sharp." That way your arrows don't get any
blood on them. Any time I've flown with broad heads or fishing lures I've had TSA do a thorough search after bag is checked and find a flyer saying they searched bag because x ray showed lots of metal

I've flown to Africa, Colorado and Missouri with my bow. Just bring it to the counter and they'll ask you to open it up. No big deal.
I take my broad heads off, wrap them in an old shirt and tuck them in my hunting boot. I do the same with my ammo when flying, it's just a personal thing I like to do.

The bad thing about packing a bow in a big case like the SKB is that with some of the airlines that will be an oversized bag which translates to an extra $75 each way. So for the $150 in baggage fees it is often cheaper to ship the bow to the destination ahead of time if possible.

I've thought about shipping, but just don't have the time to deal with it on either end of the trip. I'll be flying with it 2 maybe 3 times in the next months and at once next year out of the country, so I've got to figure it out eventually!

Thanks for the tips guys.

Don't assemble your broadheads and leave inside the case with the bow. The way they throw baggage around they may rattle loose and cut your bowstring. As for Thermacells , you can NOT take the butane cartridges on the flight. You can take an empty Thermacell and purchase the butane down there.

Just flew to New Mexico and back with my SKB case... no issues. I put my arrows in an arrow tube with Broadheads on in the case. No oversize charges. They asked what it was and I said archery equipment and checked it with my other bag. I never have had a problem flying with my bow.

Walmart sells a product called OdorCide. Works pretty well on most everything I used it on. The smell in the case is from the process in making the foam. Take it all out, spray and let dry in the sun.

SKB makes an awesome product. Since buying mine I have flown to several states as well as out of the US and into Saskatchewan, CA. All trips have been fine with my bow. I bought a shipping tube from staples for like $2 and cut it to length to fit inside on the case with the bow. I slid all my arrows into that and thats how they travelled also with no issues at all. If you want to see pictures of how I travel I could take a couple tomorrow and post them on here for you. Let me know and good luck on your hunt.
