I came across this article on another site. NJ doesn't make the list https://autos.yahoo.com/news/top-10-states-where-likely-hit-deer-200024483.html
With VERY liberal bag limits and unnecessarily long seasons I'm not surprised at all.I'm surprised NJ didn't make the list.....not surprised at all that West Virginia is top of the list......they have a density issue!
With our season and limits, we still continue to have in increase in our herd #s every year. Don't forget, we also have one of, if not the lowest percentage of hunters than any other state. Too bad some guys think shooting doe is dumb and don't understand the basic principles of herd management, yet they have no problem shooting 6 bucks a year given the chance. The buck/doe ratio is out of whack because of hunter ignorance. With VERY liberal bag limits and unnecessarily long seasons I'm not surprised at all.
I was in West Virginia in early August checking out some mountain property. ...I could not believe the amount of deer eating in the fields at night and the woods were totally devastated from being over browsed. Deer #'s definitely way beyond the carrying capacity. ...granted it was only a small part of the state i got to check out but still makes it easy to believe WV is most likely state to hit a deer.I didnt know west va had a lot of deer. I figure the good ole boys would keep them in check
NJ could never make THAT list. Way too many licensed drivers skew the data.I'm surprised NJ didn't make the list.....not surprised at all that West Virginia is top of the list......they have a density issue!
There are like 12 deer for every person in WVA.... As a matter of fact, there are more deer than teeth....I didnt know west va had a lot of deer. I figure the good ole boys would keep them in check
Yep and Id still take WV over NJ anyday![hihi]There are like 12 deer for every person in WVA.... As a matter of fact, there are more deer than teeth....
Actually our herd has decreased since 2000-2002 when the state's estimates were 200,000+ deer to approximately 160,000 now. There is an article about deer management that many states responded including NJ where this info comes from. The state also said it was by design for a healthy herd. With our season and limits, we still continue to have in increase in our herd #s every year. Don't forget, we also have one of, if not the lowest percentage of hunters than any other state.
