The BEAR Group will use every excuse to blame the victim. He ran, triggering the bears natural predator instinct. He didn't carry bear spray. Him and his friends split up instead of staying together. Etc...... Most comments I've read from articles about it, the people are saying he must have gotten between momma and cubs. If the bear was following them, I'm going with either a young male or one that was sick and attacked humans in a desperate need for food.

Is it just me, but I have noticed A LOT more bears this year, then any other year, that's bears I have seen dead along the road an in the woods. Hell, I've seen more bears hunting so far this year than deer.. the state needs to open the bear season earlier!

My guess would be old bear, and food in their packs.
Hindsight, they should have stayed together, dropped whichever packs had food in them and gotten to a safe location.
Obviously just speculation.

Shame about the loss of life.
You're right, they obviously behaved wrong. Then again I wouldn't expect a bunch of Indian guys from Edison to know how to deal with a bear. But regardless of how they behaved it doesn't take away from the fact that this state has an overpopulation of Black Bears and the hunt is doing ZERO to manage the numbers properly. The blood truly is on the hands of the animal rights extremists that don't want the number of bears controlled at all.

Wait....this is NOT possible! according to the bear group, bears have NEVER attacked a human, they DONT attack they only "bluff", they DONT protect their cubs like grizzlys, theyre scared of humans and will run away. Even if he had food in his backpack, he only wouldve went for the pack and wouldnt have hurt the guy..........what were some of the other things they said? theres so many I cant remember! I dont even want to imagine what a painful, agonizing and horrifying death that was to be ripped apart by a bear.

Very sad to hear about this the last thing I am sure they thought about was this happening to one of their party, what a horrible way to meet your end. We have had attacks happen but I believe this is the first conformed fatality in nj. As with the majority of these things sounds like it was wrong place wrong time and even if this guy did not choose to carry something to protect himself or educate himself about hiking in bear country he did not deserve to pay for it with his life. As a father and an outdoorsman I am very troubled by this news. Maybe instead of assigning human emotions to wild animals the BEAR people will abandon their cause in droves and instead focus their efforts on helping their fellow human beings.

Bears are like people when it comes to attitude. take one guys parking space he drives to another no worries. A different guy and he rams your car! lol I have come across a couple bears with attitude in my lifetime. most will run some wil stalk you. running was the big mistake for sure. I have had one follow Kingtrout and myself for a long distance and we never turned we walked out backwards. he was a big bear in sussex county. I also literally had one about a foot from the end of my muzzle loader in Rockaway. he just kept coming and I had the muzzle loader right in his (or her) face. I was so close to pulling the trigger and it turned and walked away. Not sure how that would have gone with fish and game but I felt I had waited as long as possible and that bear would have had powder burns as well as a hole in its face.
