Very tragic story. I'm curious how many bears in the preserve will be culled by the state now.

And you know the likes of Susan K. et. al, will blame the hiker since he was in the bear's territory, or it was protecting its cubs, and thus the hiker provoked the attack. Dolphins of the woods... Pfft.

WEST MILFORD — An Edison hiker was found dead Sunday after an encounter with a bear, police said.
Darsh Patel was 22.

Patel was part of a group of five Edison men hiking through the Apshawa Preserve, a wooded area of West Milford, Police Chief Timothy C. Storbeck said in a press release. They ran in different directions when a black bear began to follow them.

Four of the five men were able to find one another, Storbeck said. They called police at about 3:45 p.m. when they couldn't locate Patel.
The West Milford Search and Rescue unit found Patel's body at about 5:54 p.m.

"Evidence at the scene indicated that the victim had been attacked by a bear," Storbeck said.

A bear was found nearby and euthanized, Storbeck said.

The New Jersey State Medical Examiner, the Fish and Wildlife Division of the state Department of Environmental Protection and West Milford Police Department are investigating Patel's death.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Department, Passaic County CSI, West Milford First Aid Squad and West Milford Fire Department Company 1 assisted with the search.

This preserve was actually fenced in years ago, the tree hugger theory for the fencing was it would keep the animals out so the public can use the area safely. .didn't work

Guys we don't know for sure if it's true the bear killed him. It's tragic he died either way. The real reason we need the hunt is because the numbers are exceeding the carrying capacity of the land. Proof is the amount of damage they do in order to find available food.
They aren't gonna come steal kids out of cribs at night and aren't some evil demons. They're just animals. Some occasionally are bad but demonizong them to press our point is not gonna help and at this point premature . Just something to think about

I hope this will help the state to change the timing and length of time of the bear hunts in the future. It is just a hope, but this is NJ where a lot of us live with what I call new aged hippies or people that truly have no understanding that the limited amount of land we have in this his state can not support the amount of bears we have.

Go read the comments on the stories. People are upset that they killed the bear. THey don't even say anything about the guy that got killed.

The blood is on the hands of the BEAR Group and their ilk. If there wasn't such pressure to curtail the bear hunt from these loudmouth know nothings, maybe the state would conduct the hunt in a way that actually helps to drive the number of bears to a manageable level.
